Thanks anonymous for that clarification. I would agree.

@Paul
By definition, I would call the first two surges, and the last one a kick. It is impressive, though.

Paul Angeles 4 months ago

Am I right in saying Reid kicks 3 times in this race? It appears Reid kicks to the lead at the 2:19 mark and cruises, then kicks again at the 1000m mark, and then again at the bell lap. So, she appears to kick three times. It's like she has 5 gears from start to finish! I'm with you CWRunner, I believe she can go a lot faster if pushed. That just looked too easy for her.

@TrackCoach here's something to think about...a quote from the book "Born to Run" : "No woman ranked among the top fifty in the world in the mile ( the female world record for the mile, 4:12 ( at the time of this writing) was achieved a century ago by men and rather routinely now by high school boys. A woman might sneak into the top twenty in a marathon ( in 2003, Paula Radcliffes's world-best 2:15:55 was just ten minutes off Paul Tergat's 2:04:55 men's record). But in Ultras, women were taking home the hardware. Why, Vigil (Joe Vigil) wondered, did the gap between male and female champions get smaller as the race got longer -- shouldn't it be the other way around?

True... 4 months ago

Girls mature so much quicker then guys, that's why u can be a freshmen in college as a girl and be competitive but a freshmen guy in college would be fighting to make the finals.

TrackCoach 4 months ago

I always thought of a women's 4:34 as about equal to a men's 4 minute mile, which I guess means Sheila ran equal to a 3:56 men's mile. With that said, why are there only a couple of sub-4:30 U.S. women's indoor miles, when there are about a dozen U.S. men that do the equivalent each year? Also, does this mean Mary Cain ran equal to a 3:58 men's mile?

CWRunner 4 months ago

Straight up beast mode! She definitely could have ran a lot faster with better competition. Is it just me or does she look leaner than she was in college?

Beautiful race Sheila. Looked comfortable all the way. First couple of laps just warming up in the pack, then each time by the finish line throttled up a little more. I like that plan! This early in the season that worked. Got to give Penn State credit too. This is an absolutely beautiful track facility. I hope when Oregon gets theirs built it works this well.

Anonymous Coward 4 months ago

it looked like she deliberately waited for the sound of the bell to start kicking. could've dipped under 4:30 had she starting kicking earlier out.

Pastor Steve 4 months ago

beartiful race, just beautiful. But Sheila needs to get some top flight competition, she might go sub 4:20. Wouldn't that be special!

Next Time... 4 months ago

Instead of showing shelie reid stride out after she crosses the line, maybe you could show the rest of the race?
