Behind the walls of the San Quentin State Prison, there's something special happening. Jail is all about reform - going in one man and coming out another. For some, that means bible study. For others, there's classes. For the San Quentin 1000 Mile Club, there's running. Join coach Frank Ruona as he works with the San Quentin inmates.

I was offered a job there once and did work at Solano Prison in Vacaville for 3 & 1/2 years. It was an interesting experience. I had a class about improving one's life even while in the prison system. We met one night a week and I wanted to continue it after I left the prison system but it was not allowed. I enjoyed the experience. I'll bet you will, too. I read a wonderful book once by Nathan Leopold, whose story was made into a movie and whose lawyer was Clarence Darrow. The book was not about the crime it was about rehabilitation and forgiveness. The title is Life Plus 99 Years, Ted |

I really appreciate your comments. This opportunity was amazing. Credit needs to be given cameraman Andrew Hasse and editor Jeremy Hayes. Their work is why the quality of this piece is so good. |

Many have lacked discipline throughout their life. As most successful runners succeed through routine and discipline perhaps these individuals will when they leave. It's a mistake to offer them a chance to find some pride and self worth. They will be living among us soon. |

As a daily Flotrack user, I believe this is one of the bet coverages you guys have ever put together. In a sport most often defined by PRs and WRs, it's wonderful to see the most humble of athletes finding more positive views of themselves and others through the day-to-day lessons taught through simple physical conditioning. These men are redefining themselves through the most basic principles of our sport - worth ethic, self esteem and determination and you captured that perfectly. Without the testomonials of these inmate-athletes, the story crumbles. They, despite their mistakes, (which each of us have in our own capacity) deserve to have their stories told. Well done, Flotrack. |

I hope you are trolling. This video is about showing how running can help make us better people. It doesn't matter whether you are black, white, male, female, old, young, in jail, or walking free; running can help life our minds, teach us about ourselves, and make us a better person by teaching self-discipline, promoting better health, and numerous other things. Beyond the individual aspect when we run and train with others it teaches us respect and camaraderie towards others, developing friendships that can also make us a better person because everyone has something to contribute. Stop being so narrow and simple minded. This video has nothing to do with the inmates, it has to do with what they are doing, and being inmates helps provide a powerful example.. |

I think that this is a great program going on within prison walls. However, none of these guys deserve any film footage. They are in there for a reason. e.g. What is one of those runners killed someone you loved? Then you see them on this video? I think an interview with the coach would of been enough. I am just looking out for those friends and families that have been extremely hurt by these individuals. I forgive these inmates but I just don't feel they deserve to be on video. |
