Its been a crazy last week for some of the best teams in the country. Today it was announced that Clemson Head Coach Lawrence Johnson has resigned. The news comes on the same day pre-season indoor track and field rankings were released that had Clemson #1 in the country on the women's side. Over the week Texas women's head coach Bev Kearney also resigned after admitting to a relationship she had with one of her athletes about ten years about. The Texas women are currently ranked #14 in the country.

Just thought of this after I left the site to check out the Kearney resignation article. I remember reading on one of the message boards, TrackShark back in '02 after the tragic accident involving Kearney, that some weird stuff was going on. I'm not going to say the athlete's name because I cannot confirm that this is the only incident, but someone mentioned how a certain athlete would sit on Kearney's lap while she was sitting in her wheel chair. I thought it was a bit peculiar but out of context it meant nothing--until now.

This type of issue goes above the coaches. When you live in a culture that stresses being the best above all else, people tend to allow their morals, and thus integrity, go with it. Not to say that this is the case all the time but it happens, I'm sure, more often than not.

Alex, I want to know why these coaches think that it's okay to break the rules? I mean, regardless of what the person's intention is for bringing these issues to the surface now, how does that make what the coach actually did okay? I agree, it stinks that kids right now are being affected, but I honestly believe that it all starts with that split second, years ago, when the coaches decided that their personal agenda was more important than their athletes. These are great coaches, but with their title comes responsibilities. It's important that coaches understand that they are there to give their athletes the best opportunity to succeed both academically and athletically. It also means that you're an example to those athletes. I can't believe that a coach would ever think it's okay to be involved with a student-athlete, ever! You have to use more sense than that as a coach. I don't know what happened with the coach at Clemson, but breaking rules unintentionally is one thing; it's another to know you're breaking a rule and yet you still go through with that action. The sad reality of it, is that there a ton of coaches out there who really don't care about honesty and integrity, and will absolutely do whatever it takes to allow there team to win a national championship, even if it means they have to do it illegally. Those coaches give those of us who do the best we can with the resources we have, a bad name. No one is perfect, but if you make a mistake and know you made a mistake, let someone know. The punishment is most likely going to be less harsh and it shows that cheating isn't okay--on any level.
