User Video of the Year, Flotrack's Best of 2012 (Uploaded on May 21, 2012)

The Real Maine is the debut documentary by filmmaker Erik van Ingen. Inspired by John L. Parker's novel "Once A Runner" van Ingen approached fellow Five Star Cross Country Camp counselors Kyle Merber and Chris Derrick in August 2010.

Van Ingen proposed a summer of training in solitude. In April of 2011 action was put behind these words. The group had inquired Riley Masters about Maine as a potential training destination. Almost immediately Masters was added to the group. Merber invited fellow teammate Mark Feigen who was fresh off of a breakthrough season to join the group.

July 2011 The group met for the first time in Bangor, Maine. The film follows the lead up to the summer, the summer itself, and the successes that follow.

Note: The intense coach feature in this video is Tom Carter, the coach of Broome County Community College. Tom competed competitively in college around the time of Pre. Here are some good reads to learn more about Tom: 2011 Q&A with Tom and After 1988 Road Race Victory

Great video! Loved the feeling of connecting with such great runners. If you like things made in Maine, check out our website! We make crazy spandex for runners right here in Maine! (spandits.com)

i feel like this just scraped the surface of what you could've done, but overall a great doentary. Would've been nice if it continued into the indoor and outdoor seasons too.

he has incredible footage here. i love his angles and the cinematography. however his story is weak. the film really never goes anywhere he doesnt relate the training to their successes or failures or accurately capture any of those emotions. he should work on it

It would be awesome if you made more videos. You could make one about the trials and Olympics or other things. You could also make shorter videos so you can release new ones more often.

Awesome job. I really think the movie business is a great way to help promote running. I mean who doesn't know Pre... It would be really cool to see something that shows the continued success through this Olympic year!

waaaaay good :) yay for running!

Hmm.... 1 year ago

For what was shown I thought it was pretty inspiring. I feel like it's missing some things though. There were so many interviews with all of them, but I feel like none of them really got a lot of time at all. Derrick only talked once, and didn't show him training.

Pretty cool, but I think it had (has) a lot more potential than what came out of it. Some of the released interviews could have done really well in certain parts.

The support that these athletes give to each other is so awesome to see. I have had a chance to be a part of summer training groups and it is the most awesome experience. I imagine that training year round in Kenya is quite similar. Could this small group training be the key to US becoming better and not only for elites? For example Paul Tergat would have never become a runner at his age in the US.
