It was done this way in DIII last year too... The fifth (or so) fastest time from the year before should be the AUTO time. The odds that 16 people run faster than the 5th fastest person from the year before are very low, and would allow for a few people to have the comfort of having qualified, and being able to focus on their training...There were a lot of Olympians that came from the NCAA this past year, and it would have been hard for them to run as fast as they did if they had been forced to chase times in January.

The NCAA has gone to a straight 16 person advancement to the indoor national championships. No autos or provisionals, just straight 16, all based on time and distance. What if there are ties?? We do not know the answer to that as of yet. Regardless, in lieu of the change, one has to wonder... is this the best move or just a good move?
Though, as already mentioned, I would like to see more talk about field and sprint events where it's going to be harder to choose a definitive top 16. Lots of ties
I'm not going to argue for or against any system, however I am glad that the NCAA is finally sticking to the DI athletes with this qualification change like they stuck it to DIII last year.
Top 16 times are going to be hard to separate in the 60m, last year there were 5 guys at T-16... Will HJ and PV be based on misses if there are ties for #16?Also did NCAA D3 went to this last year?
