Utah State Coach Greg Gensel Is Hooked On Success It only took Gregg Gensel one race to take the cross country bait - hook, line and sinker. "I'm not saying this because I'm bragging, because I'm not that good of a runner, but I won my first race and so basically, I was hooked," USU's head track and field and cross country coach said. "It's like golf, you take one good swing and 18 holes of bad swings, and that one good swing, if it comes at the right time, you're going to keep coming back. "That's the same thing with running. If you have early success, you're going to want to reproduce that success." |

Soft and Hard Records in Track & Field I love manipulating statistics, so its no surprise that my two favorite sports are track & field and baseball. Now that the 2007 track & field season is over, I thought it would be interesting to try and determine which world records are soft (easy to break) and which are hard (either not so easy to break or impossible to break. |

World's fastest sham
The 100-meter dash is the oldest competition in sports. At the first Olympics, in 776 B.C., the only event was the "stade," a sprint over flat ground. The modern version of the race looks pretty similar to the ancient one: eight men sprinting, arms jackknifing, knees kicking the sky. There's no strategy, no team tactics. It's a drag race from the gun to the tape, a test of raw power and acceleration. The 100-meter record holder can call himself the World's Fastest Man and strut to victory platforms as the living embodiment of Mercury.
