USATF Statement On Marion Jones Steroid Report Statement from USA Track & Field CEO Craig Masback on reports regarding Marion Jones: “Anything that exposes the truth about drug use in sport is good for ensuring the integrity of sport. While USATF has no knowledge of any letter or pending plea agreement regarding Marion Jones, we continue our long-stated support for the efforts of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and the federal government in their investigations. Any use of performance-enhancing substances is a tragedy for the athlete, their teammates, friends, family and the sport. We await any further developments on this matter.†|

Wanjiru, Hladyr Withdraw from NYC Marathon New York, October 4, 2007—Previously announced entrants Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya and Tatiana Hladyr of the Ukraine will not compete in the ING New York City Marathon 2007 on Sunday, November 4, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg. Wanjiru, the half-marathon world record-holder, had planned to make his marathon debut in New York; however, he told race organizers he was withdrawing due to problems with his preparation. Hladyr, the runner-up in last year’s race, has a foot injury that will require surgery, according to her manager, Andrey Baranov. The surgery is planned for October 11. |

UCSD Hosts Triton Classic on Saturday LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams will host their first meet since August this weekend, as they welcome in many Division I, II and III schools to compete in the Triton Classic on Saturday, October 6. The 6k women's race will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the 10k men's race scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start. Both races will begin and conclude inside the Triton Track & Field Stadium on the UCSD campus. |

Sun Devils set to host 22nd ASU Cross Country Invite TEMPE, Ariz. - Coming off another strong showing at the Roy Griak Invitational, the Arizona State University cross country program will hit the trails again this weekend as the Sun Devils are set to play host to the 22nd Arizona State Invitational on Friday afternoon at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The women will lead off the meet with a 5,000m run at 5 p.m. with the men's 8,000m race following (approximate start time of 5:30 p.m.). Kiwanis Park is located at Baseline Road and All-American Way just six miles south of campus. |

"I'm not saying this because I'm bragging, because I'm not that good of a runner, but I won my first race and so basically, I was hooked," USU's head track and field and cross country coach said. "It's like golf, you take one good swing and 18 holes of bad swings, and that one good swing, if it comes at the right time, you're going to keep coming back. "That's the same thing with running. Amy Shipley of the Washington Post writes, "Track star Marion Jones has acknowledged using steroids as she prepared for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney and plans to plead guilty Friday in New York to two counts of lying to federal agents about her drug use and an unrelated financial matter, according to a letter Jones sent to close family and friends".

New Men's XC Rankings NEW ORLEANS - By taking Wisconsin at Saturday's Bill Dellinger Invitational, Oregon claimed the top ranking in the latest men's cross country poll, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today. The Ducks received nine first-place votes in this week's poll, enabling them to jump from ninth to first in one week. Colorado and Wisconsin are tied for second in this week's poll. Colorado, the defending NCAA men's champion, claimed three first-place votes. Wisconsin, last week's No. 1 team, earned one first-place vote. Rounding out the top 10 are Oklahoma State, Iona, Stanford, Notre Dame, Alabama, Arkansas and North Carolina State. Oregon won the Dellinger men's title with 54 points, finishing ahead of Wisconsin (73), Alabama (111), Portland (137), UCLA (147) and UTEP (148). Wisconsin's Matt Withrow won the individual title in 23 minutes 20 seconds. Oregon's Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott was second. |

New Women's XC rankins NEW ORLEANS - On the first big weekend of the collegiate cross country season, Stanford held its ground as the top-ranked team, but there was considerable reshuffling in the Cardinal's wake. Colorado moved up one spot into second in the Division I women's poll released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Two-time defending NCAA champion Stanford received 10 first-place votes while Colorado claimed the remaining three first-place votes. Third-ranked Oregon improved 21 spots from last week's poll following Saturday's victory at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore. The Ducks were one of several teams to use invitational victories as a springboard to higher rankings. |
World's fastest sham
The 100-meter dash is the oldest competition in sports. At the first Olympics, in 776 B.C., the only event was the "stade," a sprint over flat ground. The modern version of the race looks pretty similar to the ancient one: eight men sprinting, arms jackknifing, knees kicking the sky. There's no strategy, no team tactics. It's a drag race from the gun to the tape, a test of raw power and acceleration. The 100-meter record holder can call himself the World's Fastest Man and strut to victory platforms as the living embodiment of Mercury.

Gebrselassie sets marathon record in Berlin BERLIN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie shattered a marathon world record on Sunday in Berlin that had been set four years ago by his great rival Paul Tergat of Kenya. Gebrselassie was clocked in an official time of two hours, four minutes and 26 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 2:04.55 his friend Tergat set on the same flat and fast Berlin course in 2003. |
