Deena Kastor tops Katie McGregor at Tufts 10k
Katie McGregor’s 32:41 finish in yesterday’s Tufts 10K road race was similar to times she turned in the past two years, but it wasn’t good enough to claim her third consecutive title. The reason: Deena Kastor, a bronze medalist in the marathon at the 2004 Olympics, opened an early lead and never looked back to beat McGregor in 32:01.

For Mexicans, Little Surprise Over Madrazo’s Shortcut
Having spent his life as a stalwart in the corrupt political machine that ruled Mexico for decades, Roberto Madrazo has never suffered from a reputation for honesty. So it provoked laughter here when Mr. Madrazo, a former presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, was disqualified this week for cheating in the Berlin Marathon. Mr. Madrazo, who came in a distant third in last year’s presidential race, crossed the finish line in Berlin on Sept. 30 with a startling time of 2 hours 41 minutes 12 seconds, easily winning the men’s category for age 55. He grinned and pumped his fists in the air.

Interview with Paige Higgins While the record temperatures stole most of the headlines following October 7's LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, Colorado native Paige Higgins, 25, grabbed some of the post-race attention as well. Running her third marathon, the University of Kansas graduate finished seventh in 2:40:14. While most of the athletes in the field posted times significantly slower than their personal bests, Higgins shattered her PR by more than eight minutes and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials—Women's Marathon. Higgins ran her first marathon in January of 2006, winning the Walt Disney Marathon in 2:51:38. She followed that up with a 2:48:34 in the 2006 Chicago Marathon, despite suffering an injury mid-race. Earlier this year, Higgins also posted victories in the Citizens' Race at the Bolder Boulder 10k (with a 34:51) and the Gary Bjorklund Half Marathon (in 1:14:47). Higgins resides in Littleton, Colorado and teaches art at Mullen High School. We caught up with her three days after her race. |

Cross country athletes find elimination of early signing period to be stressful
It's been a trend, especially in cross country season, for the top area runners to chose a college as soon as possible - most times during the early-signing period (Nov. 14-21) before winter track begins. But for runners like Scarsdale's Julian Sheinbaum and Tappan Zee's Emma Miller-Bedell, they won't have that option anymore.
Downtown Indianapolis aims to have world-class cross country facility
Carroll Stadium and the Natatorium, both at IUPUI, are among the nation's best venues for track and field and swimming, respectively. Among the world's best, actually. Now, work has begun on another world-class venue at White River State Park -- for cross country. Ground has been cleared along the river banks for what will become the Indiana Cross Country Arena. A 2,000-meter loop trail is being developed that eventually will allow training and racing for runners of all fitness levels. "Our plan is to make Indiana the mecca for cross country running," said Stuart Lowry, director of family programs at White River State Park.
