Senior Norris Frederick broke through with the second-farthest long jump by an American this year, helping the Washington men's track and field squad to first place after day one of the MPSF Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility. The 16th-ranked Husky women also were very strong in fourth place after Friday's action. Frederick, who had never broken 26-feet indoors, turned in his best jump of the season on his second attempt with a mark of 25'-10", but then flew past that by more than nine inches on his next attempt, registering 26' 7 ¾" to assume the new NCAA lead and earn 10 points for the Husky men. It is Frederick's third-consecutive MPSF long jump crown. The mark was also a Washington indoor, MPSF meet, and Dempsey facility record, and ranks Frederick sixth in the world this year.

Mottram proves he’s ready Craig Mottram wrapped up his preparation for the IAAF World Indoor championships in Valencia with a powerful last-lap surge to win the 3000m at the Australian championships at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre tonight. The tall Victorian will fly out tomorrow for Spain where he won the first (in Madrid) of his two World Cup 3000m titles hoping to add the indoor crown to his collection. In other events on the first day of the 86th Australian Championships, which double this year as the major Olympic team selection trial, visiting New Zealander Valerie Vili was once again outstanding in winning the shot put with 19.54m. The mighty World titleholder, whose father was English and mother Tongan, was well clear of Tonga's Ana Po'uhila (17.06m) with Victoria's Kimberley Mulhall (14.94m) the first Australian in third place. Mulhall is the niece of 1984 Los Angeles Olympic shot put bronze medallist Gael (Mulhall) Martin. |

Texas Men's Track and Field sets DMR world record
The No. 13 Texas men's track and field team set a world record of nine minutes, 25:97 in the distance-medley relay on the final day of the 2008 Tyson Invitational. The Longhorns' quartet -- All-American junior Kyle Miller, U.S. junior national champion and freshman Danzell Fortson, All-American junior Jacob Hernandez and two-time NCAA champion and senior Leo Manzano – shattered five records in meeting the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 9:34 and taking over the top-spot in all of college track and field. Texas leads the descending order list by almost 11 seconds (Oregon, 9:36.21).
