C'mon now.
RITZZZZZ????? He won two footlocker championships also stepping all over Alan Webb his senior year.
I think this list is put together really well. I was very curious when I first saw it as to who would be number one, but you can truly make a great argument for either of those individuals. It is crazy to think Jager doesn't even fit in the top 10, but looking at the list it is clearly the right call.
Davis Merrick had HS bests of 4;05 and 8;43, not 4;07 and 8;48. Too, he holds the HS indoor record for 3-miles .
Former HS record holder Tom Sullivan should be on the top 10 list.
The author did not research the topic very well.
Craig Virgin won the World Cross-Country Championships, twice, in 1980 & 1981. Had the USA attended the Moscow Games he would have been fun to watch in the 10,000m.
How can you not include Craig Van Dyke? ...At least as an Honorable Mention...
Hey, what about Aaron Beattie? I hear he is like, a super cool dude.
that is an impressive list
I think Jeff Thode deserves to be on the honorable mention list...Does anyone else feel the same way about this?
I think you have to throw tom sullivan of evanston st george in the honorable mention list. He held the high school mile record when he ran a 4:03.5 in 1961. Not much info on him because I don't think St. George was part of the IHSA...
I hear there will be a big Lukas Verzbicas story on Run Junkie this week! Can't wait!
See you at the classic this weekend!
Makes me miss Detweiller Park, I can smell the fallen leaves and hear the Illinois river. The best meet ever! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
I am mad that Evan Jager didn't make the top 10, that's my boy.
I mean...Look at the numbers. Verzbicas has a faster mile, 2 mile, and 5k PR than Craig Virgin, while Virgin has the course record on a course that is no longer run. It seems like a relatively easy choice to me.
craig virgin only has the record because he ran on the old course, which was shorter, he couldnt have ran that time if he ran the newer course
Dathan is from Michigan.
Paul-I have to agree with Joe. I get your point about limiting it to HS accolades and I actually agree with that. But even without all the post HS stuff I still think Virgin is on top.
joe alexander, this list is based off of high school accolades...not olympic and world cross country appearances
A list like this is always tough and good comments as far as best ever IL prep athlete, Craig Virgin is still the best/fastest. Lukas Verzbicas clearly has a great future but couldn't beat Virgin's course record, though still very close. Add some three Olympic teams & some World CC wins and perhaps we can re-discuss.
no. it's south dakota's hat. north dakota can't be its own hat. that would be silly.
I think the second paragraph should say North Dakota, not South
