Coaches Chalkboard - with Jason Saretsky
If you want to get faster, you have to get stronger. The simplest way to get stronger is to put one foot in front of the other a whole bunch of times. Consistent mileage will help to develop an aerobic capacity that will lead to long term development. There is no magic formula for improvement, no secret workout that automatically leads to success. The key is hard work.
We start each season by building a solid base of mileage as a foundation for the rest of the season. Once at goal mileage, we add in tempo runs and then hill repeats. It is important to mix things up to keep it interesting and for maximum physiological adaptation. We also emphasize active isolated stretching before and after runs. A good stretching routine not only improves flexibility, which leads to a longer stride, but it also helps to prevent injuries.
Lifestyle choices also play a critical role in your training and help to prepare you for competition. Going to bed early, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding excesses will help you improve. It is also important to know that academic and athletic success can go hand-in-hand.
Above all else, it is crucial to enjoy the process. You should look forward to lacing up your shoes and getting out the door each day. It is great to have goals, but enjoying the pursuit of those goals is paramount.
