The much anticipated women’s race began with Huskie Kendra Schaaf taking a huge lead early on. Watching Kendra charge through three laps on this beautiful course brought back memories of her Canadian HS championship run in Ontario, Canada. On three inches of packed snow she was just as fast, slipping and sliding, but always on her feet, like a proverbial cat, and running alone way out front. It seemed like there would be no challengers for her until the last kilometer when Blood, Hasay, Babkock, and Lawrence began a charge. Blood and Hasay ran her down and it looked like Oregon would go 1-2 at the finish. But Schaaf came back on them, passing Hasay, making for a dramatic finish. Blood would win and Schaaf was second, only two seconds ahead of Hasay. Jordan Hasay was so cooked at the end she walked across the finish line in her final few steps. Mel Lawrence tripped the lights just 5/100 of a second behind her. Jordan had run a 20:33 at the Pre-Nats earlier this month. On this day she ran 45 seconds faster, 19:48.97! Nicole Blood ran a PR and nearly a course record of 19:41.71. A minute later, with a time of 20:40.99, Huskie Lauren Saylor crossed the line in 25th place. As I checked times, runner after runner, to compare best performances prior to this race, it seemed like nearly everyone was running their career best. PAC-10 officials were picking them up off the ground, walking them to their coaches and teammates at the gate. Kosinski was holding the fence to stay up, Hasay was sitting on the ground with Coach Lananna pouring water down her back, purple jackets and sweatshirts were funneling into the finish area to get the Huskie girls up and moving again.
Coming into this meet my best guess was that Washington would win again, but not a clean sweep of the first six places like last year. I was correct. The Huskie girls scored 35 points (2, 4, 5, 8, 16) and Oregon was right behind them with 42 points (1, 3, 9, 12, 17). Their respective coaches have been playing an unbelievable chess game this season, holding out a little, taking very good care of their runners, staying focused on the big picture, the National Championship. The 14th of November will bring the next move in this battle at the West meet. My intuition tells me they may not run everyone; they may not go all out. Whatever it takes to have all of the Ducks and Huskies toe in on line at Indiana State University in peak form, healthy, and very hungry!
