Workout video- Molly Huddle, the American Record holder at 5000 meters in 14:44.76, will look to make her first US Track and Field World Championship team this summer. Molly Huddle made big breakthroughs on the track in 2010 while she also set her PR for 1500 at 4:09. Huddle currently ranks #6 in the world at 10k and #11 in the 5k. She was one second off her 10k PR at the 2011 Stanford Payton Jordan Invitational where she hit the Olympic Games 'A' qualifying standard. Check out this workout with Molly Huddle and her coach Ray Treacy that took place a few days after the 2011 Mt. SAC Relays.
Workout:
10x600 starting at 1:45

Ok, mate, if you can sub 4 in high school and you're from America, you're either Jim Ryan, Marty Liquori, Tim Danielson, or Alan Webb. And only one of those guys did that in the last 40 years! I don't know where you're getting your information from but, as others have posted, your comment is to be lol'ed at. |

you can add 2 years at least to most of the Kenyans age's. when Komen broke world records when he was 23, those close to him knew he was at least 26!! Why do you think they disappear so quickly? |

/Anyway, this is why america has a huge amount of junior and collegiate athletes who can run sub 4 but somehow cant crack the senior level. America should be dominating like kenya is with the amount of runners coming out of high school and college, but all the talent is left on the track, burnt out./ |

Lol at several things. First of all she has done really well. Second of all Lagat himself said after the workout he does those same runs in like 1:301:32 8 weeks from now. Third of all she says in the workout "I dont know pace very well" when she hits the first 7 within half a second of each other. Also this is not very far off race pace btw I mean shes trying to run sub 1440. |

not sure I understand how molly can get on a track as a pro and others pros like leo cannot. weird....not saying I think molly should not be allowed, but whats the deal.Molly was at the Brown University track in Providence, RI. Leo can't be on a track with a paid coach, on a public track, in Texas. I don't know much about the Texas law, but I would venture to guess he, or any pro could be on a public track in Texas, as long as they didn't have a paid coach with them, or they could bring their paid coach, to a private track (so long as the owner allowed them). I don't think RI has a similar law, and regardless, they are Brown's Campus, which is private. |

Lagat's workout was a fartlek at much slower speeds. Much different to this one. I don't wish to argue. I like Molly and hope she does really well, I just don't understand why some people persist with long hard efforts when that is not the type of running they can expect in a race. I'm not talking about a whole program. Increasing aerobic capacity is the most important thing throughout the year. I'm talking about the weeks prior to competition when training should be specific for your event. |

I don't get this workout.oh yeah. you can also argue you dont run longer than a race, so why long runs. are you never run slow, so why jog at all. your argument is flawed on so many levels. if you think the elites should train at race pace at race distance, you are ed and i hope you are not a coach |

This is actually an awesome workout. Ivan, last week we saw Lagat do a very, VERY similar workout, except it wasn't on a track. Are you suggesting that he is wrong? You can't go from progressive tempos, long runs, long fartleks, etc... to 100 meter sprints. This is an up-tempo (faster than race pace but still submaximal VO2max) medium interval workout that is meant to make race pace feel easier. 90 seconds is not "long rest" when you are hitting 1:45 for 600....10 times. Oh yeah, 8-10 minutes rest is absolute garbage. If you're issuing that much rest, I hope to God you're athletes are at least jogging in between, otherwise, don't be surprised when they pull a hamstring. |

I really liked the end of the video, when the camera was moving along with Molly and all you heard was her breathing. It captured what a track workout feels like. |

@ Ivan, are you joking? Under that logic she should just time trial her event everyday. This is a speed workout. Speed workouts are great for developing kicks, improving running economy, and making your normal pace feel slower/more relaxed.Speed workout?? your kidding mate. You can only develop speed with bursts from 20-150m and thats useless without the endurance to be able to use that speed at the end of a race. Obviously you cant time trial every day, thats not what I'm saying. I'm saying slow down to race speed and have less rest. e.g 10x500m@1.44 (14:40) with 100float recovery. You could even start with 1000m then do 8x500's etc. you would be better off cutting out the rest periods than lowering the pace. There is a time for intervals but they should be at maximal speed with very long rest. eg. 3-4x400m with 8-10min rest. @coward, there are too many olympic athletes to name who dont do this training. If being able to perform 10 repetitions at a high pace was the key to running, then there would be an abundance of champion athletes in every country. |

I don't get this workout.Really are you serious, faster than fast pace intervals are critical to achieving faster times. THis workout is geared more to getting her used to running at a relatively fast pace for a reasonable amount of time. Are strides not important because you dont get rest in races. Aerobic base is very important but probably just as important is to be able to run close to VO2max. Can you name one athlete who doesn't do this type of interval training and is at the Olympic level in a middle distance event? |

I also agree with the fact that the video was much too short. A workout wednesday day can never be too long. The warm up, the drills and strides, all that extra stuff is what needs to be shown. 4 minutes is just too edited and smashed together. A 15 minute WOW would get watched, you the junkies on this site wouldn't sit and watch the whole thing, come on now hombres! |
