It was a little over a year ago when Olympian Brian Sell decided to hang up the racing flats permanently. The "blue collar"/underdog marathoner that we had all grown to love and wanted to follow had stepped down after disappointing results that followed the 2008 Olympic Games. We sat down with Sell to talk about his choice of retire, when he knew and how hard it was during his post-Olympic career.

I've seen interviews where Brian talked about going to dental school...I understand right now he is in a biotech program at Penn State and will enter dental school when he completes that...i'm pretty sure he has said he wants to work more on the technical side of dentristry rather than just clean teeth...

Also, i once read an interview where he said he will keep running when he retires so he can stay in shape, but just not competitively...don't think any professional runners just retire and sit on the couch...when they "give up" running, they are talking about it as a career

I admire Brian as not just a runner but the person he is. He is so humble and so kind. An inspiration to many runners out there. I love you Brian Sell!!

And the point goes to Eric. Well played.

Dental school? Nah, I don't think so. Could you be mixing him up with U.S.A steepler Josh McAdams?
Brian has mentioned in interviews going back several years that he would be going into dentistry after he retired from running. Josh McAdams is in optometry school in Tennessee, so maybe you're mixed up?

hahaha @ the amish bit "how long is a 5k" haha.

Seriously though, I think life after running would suck, unless you had achieved what you had wanted to achieve. It really just depends what kind of person you are, and why you run/ran in the first place.

I think that's the idea, that he wasn't loving running anymore. You're coming off as a bit rude (not to mention self-righteous), as if Brian didn't put himself through hell to accomplish what he did. He's already proven himself.

Great interview, it's nice to hear B Sell is doing good.

I always find it odd when these elite runners, with all this talent just totally give up running. If you love running why not run to stay in shape, and keep the weight off, and to simple enjoy the sport. Run some local 5k and 10k's. Yes you will have a full time job and a family to raise, but you can always make time for running. I was never an elite runner, good but not great, and I have been a runner for 40 years and still race and compete. If Brian thinks it was tough getting up out of bed and getting to the bathroom at his age, wait until he is 30 years older a see how if feels.

Last time we heard, he was in dental school. Wonder how many of his fans will change offices to have him as their dentist... hah

I ended my running career at almost the same time as Sell. For over 14 months I haven't taken a step. I just started some light 20 min runs this week. Do I miss it? Yes. Do I miss it enough to EVER run the 110+ mpw I used to put in? NO FUCKING WAY!

Life after running is GREAT (when you accomplish your dreams).

Great to see a retired lad happy about his life post-athletics. Definitely an inspiring guy all around.

It's hard Not to like Brian Sell. A great story, having made the Oly team in what i remember as being one of the toughest Oly Trial marathons ever.

At peace lol! Sounds like he's no longer with us. Retirement so young!
I always liked this athlete but thought it was funny that everyone tried to play him as the "blue collar runner" or the not as gifted as most just grittier!

Awesome to see he is so at peace with his retirement. He should be very proud of his accomplishments.
