Maybe Rasko is a better coach than we thought and great at dealing with Webb"s ups and downs.

Lys - You see that's just the problem, "Choice". There's too much damn choice in this country when things don't go perfectly our own way. Girl friends, marriages, jobs, etc...... seems nobody has the balls and internal fortitude anymore to actually stick with something or someone when the going gets tough! "Choice" is like a cancer that misdirects our attention from simply getting on with the business of being our best. Does this guy honestly think Salazar is trying to sabotage him? Give him workouts that set him up to underachieve? What the hell kind of paranoia is that? If the grass always seems to be "greener over there", then you're almost always guaranteed to bring your own personal weeds with you! Pathetic - this is a sad state of affairs!

We all have our own choices to make, and these athletes are in the public eye. It may not be what you would choose but these athletes feel these choices are right for them. Thank goodness we live in a nation that lets us choose our own future.

Patriot I agree the as a nation we really need to get our development system together of the young talent that we have here because there are too many athletes who have great potential falling through the cracks and yet I do agree Webb is a moron from what I've seen of him he just races dumb but also needs to see a coach through for longer then some months but he shouldn't of gone into group with no middle distance runners in the first place and a coach who doesn't coach em normally.

Patriot 2 years ago

oh would you look at that...yet another american who won't fulfil his potential. Prefontaine, Salazar, Hall, Ritzenhein, and now Webb (with German Fernandez probably heading the same way). These names were some of the most talented distance runners in the world and they've all fucked it up through their won stupidty (obviously apart from Pre who was kinda unlucky). Salazar ran himself into the ground, Hall relies too much on "god" and is too stupid to realise that he cant coach himself, Ritzenhein clearly isn't cut out for marathon and again is too stupid to realise how good he is at the 5K, and Webb is just a friggin moron who needs to learn to give things a chance cause he'll never get back to his best by switching coaches every couple of months. What a shame that our great nation has wasted all this talent...I'm almost ashamed to be from the same country as these guys.

It is hard to say if Webb has ever been that smart about his running. Clearly a man of certain gifts, but perhaps patience is not one of them. Running is a process, a long, slow build up to form. If you expect everything to come to your then you're bound to be disappointed. The secret to training is that there is no secret, maybe Webb never learned that, or wont accept it.

Webb needs to train at altitude to jump start his career. Flagstaff? Oh, and an April Fool's joke in March would be the most lame one ever.

When is Alan Webb going to give up this 1500 dream and go 5k?
Hmmmm, he's the AR Holder in the mile. Don't know your logic there.

why was Harry Groves not on this list?

Think 2 years ago

Too much shifting around will not benefit anyone! This is an impulsive decision and he should come back to the table and reconsider what Salazar/Nike have to offer. From time to time, there's bound to be rough weather in anyones career, but he shouldn't just jump ship at the first sign of a storm. He should demonstrate a little more sticktoitiveness and have faith in what Alberto and the Oregon Project are trying to do for him.

he should take his coaching from god just like ryan hall

Forget Webb 2 years ago

I don't think the question is who will Webb choose as a coach. I think the question is who would actually want to coach Webb?

Anthony Nuccio 2 years ago

I'm not sure what to make of this. I believe he made a mistake, Webb is really starting to fall off what he used to be. Alberto has a history of coaching great athletes. Hopefully this movie work out well. It definitely is more than Alberto, Webb seems to have a pretty big ego if he's letting go of yet ANOTHER coach.

Salazar gets a lot of attention as a coach. But from what I've seen. The athletes were already successful before joining with him. I don't think Webb would improve with more time under Salazar. And Ritz should find a new coach as well. As a coach Salazar should not have let him run so many laps on a track for training when you are prone to injury. And changing Ritz stride hasn't made any progress either.

This has got to be fake 2 years ago

This doesn't make any sense. He hasn't given the training he is working on a chance to kick in. Something doesn't smell right. Although I think he would do really well training with Leer, Bethke, Willis, and Emanuel.

Webb unfortunately is not very well in tune with the concept of patience. Having a tantrum because his first race of the season did not go as projected shows his lack of faith. Sadly, it now looks like the come trail has detoured onto a longer road.

New coach: God
taken by Ryan Hall remember

Long time problem 2 years ago

Webb has "parted ways" with every coach he's ever had! This is nothing new. He is essentially uncoachable except by himself. That's just the way it will always be. Too bad.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Very stupid move on Webb's part. Salazar was going to take him places. To curious, Webb will most likely NOT be undoing training, you don't make up for lost time in running, that's how you get hurt.Mark I also disagree that Ryan Hall is the best distance runner in the country. He races at most twice a year and has not had a Hall-level performance in the marathon since a few years ago. Alan Webb is also no longer one of the top middle distance runners in the country. Andy Wheating, Nick Symmonds (for 800m), Nick Willis, and Leo blow him out of the water. He USED to be the top middle distance runner. He could've been again under Salazar. He has trouble taking his ego and putting it aside, which is more than likely a major factor in all this.I also disagree that Webb will move back to Warhurst. Webb left UMich for a reason (of which would be he disliked Warhurst's training and how he was improving under Warhurst). Webb's been a guy of bad decisions: leaving UMich, going back to his high school coach, now leaving Salazar. I got news for you people, Salazar is THE creme de la creme of international coaching today.
Dude, Nick Willis is a Kiwi.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

To Vinny Chiusano its kinda hard to take what you've just said seriously when you mention "Nick Willis" as one of the countries better middle distance runners than Webb

First, i still think this is a big, really stupid April fools joke.

But if it is true, while all the potential coaches mentioned are great coaches the only one that would make sense at this point in Alan's career would be to join Cook's group. Although, i was really excited to see what the slimmer Alan would run this year under Al Sal.

Lets take a look at each coach/group.

Cook: His training methods are basically what Alan did with Raczko. So its a proven recipe with but with the master chef. Plus there are the MD horses there to train with. It's a pro group who spends countless hours at the track doing all the ancillary work one can imagine. Webb's ecstasy. I think he would fit nicely into the dynamics of the group. But does he want to be the focus or can he play nicely with others?

Rowland: Symmonds is fast but limited to the 800. Can that group give Alan the aerobic challenge he needs? Would be an easy move since its in the same area.

James Li: may be a great coach and his training methods may match but at this point in Alan's career thats a big leap of faith. and he would still be the stepchild.

Vig: college coach with college responsibilities.

Warhurst: cant see him going back there with the way college went. Ron has a history of breaking guys or getting them in great shape. very risky.

Vin: college coach with lots of studs to worry about. Wheating is a beast and its local for Alan, assuming he wants to stay there. Has Vin had much post collegiate success beyond the first year post college?

Shu: 5/10k oriented. Lots of studs for sure. Maybe too many? Wouldn't be much of a transition geographically.

I'd have to think he would look for what he knows worked and try to improve on it.
