Martin burst onto the scene in Ireland as a junior running 8:12 for 3,000m. He followed in the footsteps of many great Irish distance runners before him and chose to attend Providence College in America. While there, under mentors Ray Treacy and Keith Kelly, Martin garnered numerous All-American Awards. In cross country, he placed 16th in 2005 and 5th in 2006 at NCAAs. Both years he won the Big East individual titles. In 2005 he shattered the historic Van Cortlandt Park course record in running 23:48 at Big East. The following year he broke Keith Kelly's Franklin Park record in running 23:09 at Big East. On the track, he also earned multiple All-American awards. His highest finish on the track at NCAAs was as runner-up in the 10,000m in 2006.
After college, Martin began running for Reebok and moved to Flagstaff, Arizona to train. He has been one of the top Irish distance runners. He won multiple national championship titles, was a 2008 Olympian, and in 2009 he broke the 21 year old Irish Half-Marathon record by running 1:00:57.
