Jack Daniels is just plain interesting, no matter what he says. He could talk about tax forms and i'd be enthralled.

I heard their conversation at 5:11

I first remember Jack from a great training article he wrote for Running Times back in the early 80s. I made copies for friends and used it as a bible until he wrote %u201CDaniels%u2019 Running Formula%u201D in the late 90s which I have used as the %u201Cbible%u201D ever since.
Does anyone know if he has written anything for really old people (I am 71)? I do triathlons now, partly because I can still go fast on the bike and fairly fast in the swim. But, my heart is still in running and I would like to get some of my old speed back.

you dont have to be jumping off the walls to fire someone up. It's the words that he chooses that can make the difference in someone's mentality, motivation, etc.

i have known jack for nearly 30 years and have learned quite a lot from him. one important thing is that your training should make you confident and you should need no one to fire you up. your own competitive fire should take you through a competition. my thanks to mark for his work, flocast is a great part of our sport now. and thank you jack for your friendship. all is well back east.

ryan_x, was that sarcasm? or are you "try this"'s mom? and what the hell is a 'proper person,' anyway?

try this 4 years ago

just trying to make a point, not to be taken literally

Ryan_x 4 years ago

try this...that was completely innapropriate. Proper people dont need those things.

if you need someone else to excite you, try going to a strip club. that should work. otherwise, your when you're a grown man you should sac up and be able to compete for yourself, not because someone is cheering for you on the sideline.

Dear egun,
You're a douche,

Sincerely,
Kurt

this is why his runners don't win big events - they are 'cruise' trained, they just don't win medals. people i know who have fired him as a coach say - he just doesn't fire me up. . .

I'd like to ask a question that could be sensitive..but..it may be interesting...maybe not..
But here goes..
"When do you know when a system that you really believe in and coach, dosen't work for someone and at what point do you amicably part ways?
As a coach myself, its very frustrating when a kid dosen't buy in to a system, I know would work, but he just won't go there...
I had that happen to me, man, I was mad, but I let it go and wished him well.
Has that happen alot with you?
maybe for a future short video-ha

He is the most insightful and smart coach I have ever heard, there is a reason he best coach in our sport.

Thanks Mark fo this interview.

damn jack, you're good 4 years ago

i don't think i will ever get sick of what this guy has to say. he talks about some of the most insightful stuff in our sport. things that most all of us struggle with. and everything he says makes sooo much sense, its crazy

I never get tired of hearing this man talk. If only some of the people in the area where I live could hear him speak about running; perhaps the sport would grow at a faster rate and receive more support/recognition. Inspiring commentary.

Finally more Jack Daniels.. Such good advice, without a doubt the greatest coach ever.

Mark you are so lucky to get to talk to him, thanks for bringing this to us.
