So what if Coe ran a little wide. Prefontaine used to take them out to lane 6. Just asked Bjorkland............

Isn’t this a new National Junior Record for the 3K? Betters Rupp’s 7:49.16 outdor time.

very ballzy run by coe

Dear FloTrack.org 4 years ago

Thanks Ryan. Now we all can sleep.

Mike M. SE Michigan (stunned) 4 years ago

Wow, thanks Ryan for setting these people straight. Now because YOU said it, they will believe what their eyes were already telling them and only a few people could figure out & that is that Coe did nothing wrong, period.
To Dear FloTrack.org...................did you really need Ryan to explain that video to you? Did you need his approval of the obvious?
If whoever called the race said a purple elephant was in third place and moving up fast, would you have believed that?

Poster #35 How dumb do you feel now? I don't THINK what happened, I know, but you obviously didn't. You failed with your short essay. Good Day!
Nice site Ryan and keep up the good work. Congrads on the recent 2:30 plus marathon.

Ryan From Flotrack 4 years ago

sorry for the confusion, but if there was a mistake it wasn't mark. i was called as the race was going.....didn't look like coe deliberately went hard wide, just a slight step going into the curve. nothing that look to be wrong or illegal. just all part of racing...its good stuff :)

Dear FloTrack.org 4 years ago

Can you please settle this once and for all. Did you not state the facts correctly when you "Misspoke" about the race? Please tell us your version in writing what you witnessed. Thanks

To: Mike M SE Michigan 4 years ago

Look! I know you're just trying to smooth things over by posting your somewhat short little essay of what you THINK you know, however maybe I need new ears as well. "Misspoke" is something you came up with, not me. I am sure Coe personally is a nice guy, however what happened in the race can be compared to a "sucker punch". GF got suckered, but he came back up to finish the deal.

Mike M. Southeastern Michigan 4 years ago

Poster Number 32...........................You need new glasses! Seek immediate help. He mentioned Coe running him to the outside because of the angle and the fact that he "misspoke" and should have immediately corrected himself, but didn't. Coe was nowhere near the 2nd lane, but in the middle of the first, just as German was when Coe had passed him earlier. The lack of intelligence on this board is scary! The video doesn't lie, it tells the truth which is Coe did nothing to make German run further. Ask yourself this. Was Coe on the outside line of lane 2? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, not even close. The commentator didn't lie, he misspoke during the heat of the race and should have retracted his statement. You guys are German wanna be's or just plain stupid! Watch the video again. Maybe after 100 times you'll get it. It only took me once.

IT'S NOT CHEATING!!! 4 years ago

WHY IS EVERYBODY ACCUSING COE OF CHEATING?!?!?!?! HE NEVER CAME INTO CONTACT WITH GERMAN, HE JUST MADE HIM RUN A LITTLE WIDE, NO FOUL PLAY THERE. SO WHY DON'T WE JUST DROP IT, OK?

Plain as Day 4 years ago

Video doe not lie, neither does the commentator. Why else would he mention Coe running him to the outside. Coe did it because most likely he knew he could not outkick GF. They should have just named this race "Cheat to Win 3K".

Trust Me! 4 years ago

To Um.................who cares if it was or wasn't Mark. If it wasn't, then I apologize Mark, but it sounded just like him but more importantly, that's not the point Um!!!!!!!! You and many others should get a clue.

The guy, Coe, never ran into the second lane, period. You people are listening to the announcer's comments and thinking that you're seeing what you're hearing him say, but your eyes should tell you all you need to know. He never pushed him or drove him to the outside.
Wow, pugetsoundhound was the only person on the whole thread besides me to see what really happened and post it. You people can't be very educated. It's as easy as opening your eyes. You have my pity!

um 4 years ago

I think it's kind of funny that every single anonymous poster thinks Mark does the announcing for every single video on the site.Although a seasoned traveler, he can't announce uw, iowa, bu, etc. in 24 hours.

Mark_in_Oly 4 years ago

If one advances the footage frame be frame, you see Coe in the middle of the lane. He glances back, just as the camera picks up the bend in the turn. It appears that he is bee-lining for lane two. Stop the film. Look at his feet. They are still in the middle off lane one! Once again, case closed.

Trust me! 4 years ago

Wow, you guys are wrong!!!

Thanks for the announcing Mark and for the great site, but you called that wrong. Look at it again. Coe did not run him wide. He was in the center of his lane, period. You should NOT have made that comment during the race and probably didn't mean to do so.
Personally, I would retrack it ASAP. Again, look at it again. Coe is running in the center of his lane all the way down the back stretch. He never pushed German wide. He was not running on the extreme inside and then jumped out to the middle of his lane. I've watched it several times and can't see what you're talking about. Sorry Mark, you called that one wrong.
They both ran great, but Coe did nothing wrong or even close to it. Look at 57 seconds into the video and German is in the center of lane one when Coe passes him. What's the difference?
Coe NEVER went wide Mark. You make great videos and a lot of great calls, but not that one.

Ben 4 years ago

It confers to advantage to run wide, as the increased distance your competitor needs to run is exactly offset by the increased distance you need to run.

Going wide is one thing. Coe looked over his shoulder, twice, and moved in front of German. Purposely blocking someone is a cheap ass move that deserves to be called out. Bad sportsmanship.

his arm carriage is willis-like, without the leg speed (coe's)

good to see coe back running some good 3ks (or 3200 is high school). reminds me of when he battles with forys in the 3200 at NIN, except he won that race.....

all i can say is wow

Mark_in_Oly 4 years ago

Coe moved from the curb after completing the turn and gradually moved to the CENTER of lane one. Anything else would have idiotic. This is standard, by-the-book racing. He made a bold move. German resonded. Coe even came back at the end. Just plain great racing from both! End of story.

runners=wusses? 4 years ago

going wide is a legit tactic, anyone who says otherwise is a wuss. being able to go wide is one of the benefits of front running, I am sure Pre used it a lot (just to shut up all the high schoolers who are on his nuts and pre can do no wrong). Coe took the lead late in the race and made it an exciting one, give him some props.

Both German and Michael break the Dempsey Indoor Track Record of 7:48.59 set by former Cal alum, Bolota Asmeron in 2004 running for Nike.

Congrats to both German and Michael.
Great racing!

Running wide is a legit tactic that's been used forever.
Especially in Europe.
This was great race, great tactic and the better man, on this day, won.
Some of you youngins need a little seasoning it seems.
Regardless I'm glad to see Coe back in good form and German continue to show that he's an amazing talent! The future of American distance running looks very bright indeed!
