In his fourth year as assistant coach, John Gondak has helped Penn State's Middle Distance surge to the forefront of the NCAA. Last year his runners went 1-2 in the Indoor Big Ten Champs, and 1-3-4 Outdoors. He also put together a DMR which broke the school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Already this year, Gondak and PSU have 3 athletes under the NCAA Auto of 1:48.00 and another athlete with the provisional. Just for reference, on 3 athletes in the entire NCAA ran under 1:48 total last indoor season, and he currently coaches three. He discusses his dream job coming to PSU, the mid-d program and the Penn State program as a whole heading into 2010.

No worries Anon. Coward, I was just defending PSU ;-) and yes I agree, would be great to see the two compete head to head again!

Ok Ok running man, you have got me again. You are soo right (dang). And I didn't mean any disrespect to Franek, I actually admire her athleticisim and she is even a fellow biker-per her blog last year when she was biking/training all over Europe by herself! i hope her and Nicole meet again on the track and develop a Willard/Barringer-esque rivalry!

That is very unfortunate what happened to Bush, she's a very amazing athlete. But her accident didn't exactly allow the PSU athlete (Franek) to advance. She made it to the finals on her own and had to deal with the barrier issue just like every other athlete did in the women's steeple at the USA Champs. And her time in the finals was well under the World A standard. Franek did get 3rd, but let's say Bush had raced and beaten her, but both achieved the world A standard. Since Anna Willard took 2nd in the race and hit the A standard she was guaranteed a spot on the World Steeple team but she opted not to run the steeple at worlds. Case in point, if that was the scenario with Bush running, PSU's Franek would have still made it to the world meet. It's not fair to say that Bush's accident pushed the PSU girl into advancing. And with our sport you just never know what can happen on race day!

Ah, Justin good point about the world team member. Unfortunately Nicole Bush had an accident on the track that allowed PSUs member to advance if I remember correctly. I will admit I am biased towards distance running and don't really pay attention to sprints so if they don't have a good cross distance program they are not on my radar. But thanks for keeping me in line!

Well you have to consider that not many women's teams that consistently have one of the best 4x4's in the nation, also have a top 15 NCAA XC team. it is not an easy feat to pull off. The only teams At NCAA's this past fall in xc that were in the finals of the ncaa outdoor 4x4 last spring were Penn State, Baylor, and ASU.

They also had a female World team member in the steeple last year.

Runningman, yes I was refering to distance program and even cross. Maybe I should have qualified my statement. I believe at NCAA cross they placed 14th and that was a good year for them. I was just commenting on the fact that I would think such a large school from such a large state would have a little bit better showing.

Anon. Coward...the women have never had a really great women's program or any standout stars in a long time? Really? In 2008 they were 4th at the outdoor NCAA track and field meet (as well as the big ten champs that year). That sounds like a pretty great program! Maybe you meant their mid-distance squad? But the sprints and throws have been very good for many years now and the distance has had a breakout year this past year!

For a large University Penn State has never really had a great women's program or any standout stars in a long time.

Well I am sure he meant head coach as his dream job! But now he is just spreading the love and palying the game.

I have a hard time believing that John's "dream job" is being Beth's little underling ... couldn't be anymore vague regarding training specifics.
