Flotrack's Best of 2011 - Most Watched Interview!

Video Interview- Ryan Hall finishes 4th at the 2011 Boston Marathon in a time of 2:04:58. Ryan Hall's time of 2:04:58 is 40 seconds faster than the current American Record of 2:05:38 held by Khalid Khannouchi from London back in 2004, however the course is not certified for American or International records. Ryan Hall battled up in front the majority of the race, having the lead as late as 20km. In 2010 Ryan Hall became the fastest American ever at the Boston Marathon in 2:08:52. This year he ran almost four minutes faster. Hall's great performance came after he left Coach Terrence Mahon and the Mammoth Track Club. His races leading up to Boston did not indicate the results we saw today as he did not even break 1:03 for the NYC Half Marathon. Ryan Hall will look to run on the track for the 2011 track and field season this summer.

The 2011 Boston Marathon was won by Geoffrey Mutai in a time of 2:03:02 which was faster than the World Record time of 2:03:59 held by Haile Gebrselassie.

Will Moses still get credit for the fastest ever debut in the marathon?

Man, how did he drop 4 minutes off of his time!?! And a new world record was set? Okay, I'm going to throw it out there. Anyone think distance running may have some of the same doping problems of my other sport love, cycling?
No.

He seems to be a nice guy who is a gifted runner with the attitude that he can win races. I dig the racer mentality but at the end of the day when he doen't win and runs under 2:05, he seems humble and happy. As far as the tailwind, I trust Bill Rodgers probably knows as much about that that anyone.

Yes, that's the only reasonable response to a world record being broken on a downhill, wind-aided course. If we're talking about sprinters, I'll entertain that conversation. But there's really no evidence of anything untoward, and these guys get tested frequently.

Also, what's the incentive in distance running to dope? If you're already elite, it's a matter of pride, and I don't know of many runners who would dope just to move from 4th to 2nd. If you're not quite elite, it's not exactly the most lucrative sport in the world, and you have everything to lose. I seriously doubt it. No need to float baseless accusations.

HEY ALL YOU IDIOTS WHO ARE TALKING ABOUT THE TAIL WIND. I WAS THERE YESTERDAY. I RAN A 3:20 PERSONAL WORST (MY SECOND MARATHON) I RAN 3:09 FOR A PR A YEAR AGO. THAT WIND CERTAINLY DIDN'T HELP ME DO ANYTHING, AND I THOUGHT I HAD PREPARED BETTER AND WAS MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT RUNNING A MARATHON. I WENT OUT CONSERVATIVE IN 1:34 AND DIED LIKE A B*TCH AT MILE 22.75.

THE TAIL WIND A LOT OF THE TIME WAS COMING AT US FROM THE SIDE, AND I KIND OF FROZE MY ARSE OFF GETTING SWEATY AND HAVING THAT CHILLY WIND DRY ME OFF. CONDITIONS WERE CERTAINLY APPROXIMATING IDEAL, BUT THE WIND DIDN'T GIVE AS MUCH HELP AS EVERYONE CLAIMS.
RYAN HALL IS AWESOME. EVERY TIME HE'S RUN AT BOSTON COULD HAVE WON THE PREVIOUS BOSTON MARATHON. HE JUST CANT CATCH A BREAK SINCE SOMEONE ALWAYS SHOWS UP AND COMPLETELY STUNS THE WORLD.

My hat is off to Ryan Hall and Kim Smith. What courageous front-running. I think a quote from the greatest American front runner of all time, Prefontaine, is appropriate here: "A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more". Way to go Ryan!

Adam Bradley 2 years ago

sub-2:05 at Boston is way too fast to be bickering about pacing. Hall obviously felt great yesterday (see his crowd-pumping antics about an hour in) and he ran spectacularly. Don't hate on the guy for taking the lead and pushing someone to a new [unofficial] world record. SOMEbody has to be in front.

John Stamos 2 years ago

Maybe Ryan should learn how to pace himself ... why lead?

This guy has the strategic awareness of a fruit fly and because of that I dont expect him to win much ... such talent but SOOOOOOO stupid ... ditch the bible and start to think
Prior to today, I liked Ryan Hall. Today, I love Ryan Hall. How many Westerners would have had the guts to force the pace against the Africans and try and go for the win? Hall raced with courage -- and that's something that any runner should appreciate.

Ryan Hall is amazing he showed courage in the face of adversity, tore down barriers, and showed millions of runners just how great he is. MAD respect for Hall lead from the gun till the half way point reminds me of Pre just throwing it all out there not settling for less than his best CONGRATULATIONS RYAN!

the amazing times that we saw here today, were due in part to ryan's front running early and mid race, I find it amazing how no matter how well these runners perform there are always those, like yourself, who will find something to complain about. and it's also amazing how people who say ryan's faith is inconsequential are the first, and often only, to bring it up and take a shot at it. if u can't respect the faith then at least dig down deep to find some shred of decency and respect the athlete. furthermore as far as strategy goes, he did it perfectly, he was checking his watch frequently before he let the pack go and drop a 4:25 15th mile, he was aiming for 2:04 and thats exactly what he ran. Phenomenal performance by Ryan as well as the other runners in this race

Wow! Ryan hall proved a lot of people wrong today at the Boston marathon. That was a great performance! .

How long will Universal hold the full replay for ransom?

jffc 2 years ago

Ryan run really good but why doesn't he believe in himself? God does not care about how fast you run! There are more important things going on in the world then running!!! If Ryan believed in himself He would have won the Marathon!!!

absolutely ridiculous that boston is a certified record course. this was one of the greatest performances of all time and it should be recorded as that. congrats to ryan! go USA!

Give em the records 2 years ago

If minor elevation changes (correct me if I'm wrong, but Boston falls just outside of being considered, correct?) can eliminate a course from being considered in record breaking, than shouldn't "pace setter courses" be ruled out as well? Just a thought

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

It dosnt count because the course IS a point to point course. The reason for this is because of a change in elevation which can benefit the runners. Get your story straight before you go posting.

Can we all just relax and appreciate this simply for what it is, an awesome race? And by the way, maybe my math is wrong, but is Hall not ow withing striking distance of the world record?

Hey there little buddy who can't even log in. Here you go:

RH, somehow I am supposed to apologize for comments I made about you recently that offended "everyone at Flotrack".
For some reason I am supposed to apologize for referring to you as America's greatest marathoner 3 times in the last week. I am also apparently obligated to apologize for referring to your running, faith and charitable works as incredible, good and wonderful.
I'm also sorry that I still find it A LITTLE uncomfortable and self important when someone can't relate even simple, seemingly unrelated info without telling me all about their personal faith and how it is so special that it requires a format of communication completely unique amongst their peers.
I'm sorry that I am still surprised how apparently no other T+F athletes have a strong relationship with God. Otherwise they also would have required similar interviews.
But as my little buddy has so amply demonstrated, it is unnaceptable to question ANYTHING about a person who is moved by faith. It seems faith is the magic word that makes even partial, slight critiques unreasonable.
Does it make me bad for running without believing in a Christian God? No matter what any one person believes, we can all agree that Ryan Hall ran his ass off today and definitely represented the USA well. I support you LV, let bigots be bigots. It's a shame most of everyone can't represent themselves well on the track or off of it. I feel bad for them.

LV 2 years ago

Hey everyone, get off LV...He just payed huge compliments to Ryan. He doesn't have to apologize for questioning. At least he makes logical statements, unlike "Stupid" down there who threw the Bible in out of nowhere as if reading the Bible somehow made Hall go to the lead...

Living Vicariously 2 years ago

Hey there little buddy LV! I think you owe Ryan there a big apology! Just come out and say it - it won't hurt, I promise!................... "I was wrong, I'm very sorry Ryan" and...... I'm very sorry to everyone at Flotrack that I offended." Com' on now, you can do it!
