Galen Rupp’s career started after famed runner/coach, Alberto Salazar, watched Rupp playing soccer. After that fateful day, Rupp went on to become one of the most decorated high school runners of all time. Before leaving Central Catholic High school, Rupp had garnered two Oregon State Cross Country titles, and three individual track titles (1500&3000m in ’04 and 3000m in ’03). 2003 also brought him a runner up finish at the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. That spring he could go on to run 4:01.8 in the mile (8th best prep of all time) and a 13:55.32 for 5k at the Stanford Invitational, beating every collegian in his heat. That summer he shattered the US High School record for 5k after running 13:37.91 in Belgium. He followed that performance with the fourth fastest 10k ever run by a high schooler, finishing in a time of 29:09.56.
After finishing high school, Rupp matriculated to the University of Oregon where he would run for the Ducks, where his career would be just as impressive as his time as a prep runner. His cross country career culminated in 2008, when he outkicked Liberty University standout Same Chelanga, to win his first NCAA Cross Country title in a course record of 29:03.8. Previous to that Rupp had been finished 6th(2006) and 2nd(2007).
In Rupp’s first collegiate track season(2005), he broke Rudy Chapa’s US Junior record for 10,000 meters after crossing the line in 28:25.52, which still stands today. That year he was also runner up in NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for 10,000meters. In 2006, Rupp earned All American honors in the 3000m and 5000m runs.
The next year, 2007, he placed 3rd in the 5k and 4th in the 3k to once again earn All American Honors for Indoor Track and Field. That outdoor season, Rupp bettered his 5k and 10k PR’s after running 13:30 and 27:33.48. At the time, his 10k time was the American NCAA Collegiate Record and ranked seventh all time in the US. At the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Rupp once again finished runner-up in the 10,000m.
Rupp redshirted his 2008 track season to prepare for the Beijing Olympics. That summer at the USA Olympic Trials he finished 2nd in the 10,000 meter run to notch his first trip to the Olympics. While in Beijing, Rupp finished in 13th place with a season’s best 27:36.99.
Rupp’s last year as a collegian was one for the record books. During the 2009indoors Rupp ran his first sub-4 minute mile, running a 3:57.86. At that year’s NCAA Indoor Championships he pulled off an unheard of triple, taking home the 5000m, distance medley relay, and 3000m titles.
That outdoor season Rupp won the 5000 meter and 10,000 meter runs at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. His time as an Oregon Duck saw Rupp a 14-time All-American with five individual NCAA titles, and three team titles.
As a professional, Rupp is still coached by Alberto Salazar and is sponsored by Nike. In his first season as a professional he won the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships 10k, defeating the then American Record holder at the 5k, Dathan Ritzenhein. That summer Rupp finished 8th at 10,000 meters in the World Outdoor Championships in Berlin.
2010 again saw success at the world stage. He followed his 2010 USA Outdoor 10k title with a series of Personal Bests at the Pre Classic, The London Grand Prix, and a 13:07.35 5k at Weltklasse.
In 2011 Rupp again defended his USA 10k title, and finished 7th at the World Championships in Daegu. He finished his season with a new American Record in the 10,000 meters, besting Chris Solinsky’s record by more than 10 seconds, crossing the line in 26:38.00.
2012 has already been kind to Rupp, as he just finished the 5000 meter run at the Prefontaine Classic with the fastest time run by an American on US soil. His time was 12:58.90.
