Vikings Take Off For 2008 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships Written by: Joseph Cheshire Release: 02/28/2008 Send this article to a friend Print bullet 2008 Big Sky Indoor Championships Meet Website Freshman Chelsie Jorgensen View larger Photo Credit: Matt Barreau Freshman Chelsie Jorgensen Pocatello, ID- Friday morning at 9:30 the Portland State Vikings will be begin competing in their 12th Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship. The Vikings have 14 athletes who have qualified for 21 events. Among those are senior thrower Caressa Sims, sophomore jumper Nkeiru Ugwoaba and freshman distance runner Chelsie Jorgensen. Sims holds the Portland State record in the weight throw with a distance of 62’ 10.75”. Her throw is also the longest distance in the Big Sky Conference this season by nearly four inches. Sims’ mark also met the NCAA’s provisional qualifying mark. Ugwoaba has the second longest distance in the Big Sky in the triple jump. She leaped 39’ 10” at the University of Washington Invitational. The distance tied her personal best set last season. Jorgensen qualified for three different events this weekend. The freshman will be competing in the 800m, Mile, and 5,000m. The championships kick off at 9:30, Friday with the hepthalon’s 60m dash. Viking Senior Places 11th at National Tournament Written by: Portland State Athletics Release: 02/24/2008 Send this article to a friend Print View larger Photo Credit: Matt Barreau Boston, Mass.- Portland State's senior thrower Caressa Sims completed her competition at the United States of America Track and Field Championships, Sunday afternoon. Sims finished the national tournament 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 60' 6.75". Her mark was a little over two feet short of her previously set Portland State record of 62' 10.75. The completion of the USATF Championships marks the end of Portland State's regular-season and will be looking forward to the Big Sky indoor championships next week, being hosted by Idaho State.
