It was announced yesterday that Stephanie Garcia of the University of Virginia was named to the 2011 World Championship team and will represent the US in Daegu later this month. Garcia will be taking the place of Delilah DiCrescenzo who pulled out of the competition with what has been speculated to be a stress fracture. (UVA release here)
You may remember at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June, Stephanie Garcia was in third place going over the last water pit and looked to have a good shot at making her first US team. Garcia clipped the barrier, went down in the water pit and was passed by Delilah who took the last qualifying spot for Daegu. Garcia finished fourth.

This is a big opportunity for Garcia, who has made major strides during the 2011 season as she dropped her steeple time from 10:05 (from 2010) to 9:41, a time she ran at a meet in Gent (Belgium) this summer. The mark currently ranks her #34 in the World. She was also the NCAA runner up behind Emma Coburn, running 9:47 in Des Moines.
