Andy Powell talks about decision to race for mile record and potential 5k record in outdoors

Powell says Ches to target outdoor 5k record

Andy Powell, coach of collegiate mile record holder of Edward Cheserek, talks about the decision to skip the conference meet and bring Cheserek to Boston for the mile record attempt. Powell gives some insight to the NCAA Indoor Championship in two weeks and also mentions their intention to target an outdoor 5k record.

The Oregon school record is 13:14.80 by Bill McChesney, Jr. (1982), but the NCAA outdoor record is Henry Rono's 13:08.4 from 1978 (Note: Lawi Lalang ran the fastest collegiate 5k mark indoors at 13:08.28 in 2012, the same race Cheserek broke the high school 5k record in 13:57 - Watch here). Cheserek has run 13:18.71 as a sophomore in 2014 when he finished second to Lalang at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (both times broke the previous meet record). The time currently ranks Cheserek #10 all-time in the NCAA.
