Funny stuff 3 years ago

You are absolutely right. Why train hard if not to win and stick it in the face of all those losers who were too pathetic to beat you. Ah, what a great planet we live on. I'm going to go take a bubble bath.

GREAT STUFF!

WD 3 years ago

and "selling his soul out"? Are you serious? He is trying to make a living doing what he loves and if signing with a shoe company is the way to do it then thats how it should be done.

WD 3 years ago

BP,
When i say "dream" i mean him getting to continue his running career which is his passion, and in order to do that he needs to be able to have money for travel and races, and gear to run in. Sure, this is not like signing some huge contract with Nike or making some kind of world team;but this is a stepping stone for him in the right direction toward all of those other thing. A big stepping stone too because he now has some money to work with and will get a chance to get into bigger meets and run faster times doing what he loves. So in a way this is him starting to realize a "dream". The dream of being a PROFESSIONAL runner.

If a win like this is not worth celebrating then what's the point of racing?

Matthew Schneider 3 years ago

I knew when I saw the Puma Mile release that David Torrence was going to enter and win that contract.

We need sponsorships. We need big companies to help "us" out. That would be runners, small clubs like ours trying to give kids and post-collegiate runners a chance to run. We have a small budget and it is self-funded right now by us due to the economy. Most givers/donors/donators are hurting so to keep track and field alive we need the Big Guys like Adidas, Brooks, Nike, Puma, etc to lend a helping hand.
Pro track failed but companies and clubs and obviously collegiate track can help to "keep it alive". Even the USOC/WSO is lending a helping hand as well these days. Chicago will be busy this summer with Keep Kid's on Track....maybe 1000 to 1500 elementary school kids will experience track and field in the Windy City. Thanks USOC/WSO and Mayor Daley.

Great job David Torrance,

Congratulation on your sponsorship big timer. Your performance was most entertaining. That 6k win and sponsorship is far more important then a sub 4min mile.
You earned your celebrate down the stretch by blowing away the competition. The fans there came alive when you did the Hulk Hogen ear cup, rose when you waved your arms, and will remember your flex through the line.
Now I know who David Torrance is, He's a Pumas' top miler.

Had he finished stronger he would have been looking at 3:59

PB&J 3 years ago

Congrats torrence!
I'm glad you got what you dreamed to achieve but common You need to be a little more humble. it was fine with you celebrating down the homestretch. But finishing the race and poping open a bottle of champayne and putting on champions belt on that was a little too far. Why don't you do that win you actually win something that matters like a gold at the olympics bud. If any of the other guys in the race would've won they wouldn't have done that. They would've been humble about it.
Congrats though wish you goodluck on the rest of your season

Did someone pay Vincent Rono not to show up or something? What the "other" black runner supposed to be the substitute just in case folks were looking for 2 kenyans and only saw one? Rono was a NCAA DI champ and a SERIOUS threat to DT imho. Anyhow, congrats to Torrence for getting what he wanted in a shoe contract.

Harry X 3 years ago

actually, someone who can whip the crowd into a frenzy is exactly what this sport needs. a love him or hate him superstar like prefontaine to bring people to the sport.

Andrew Utas 3 years ago

That's what we needÂ…more showboating! As "Wtf" said, "he looked back hella (sic) timesÂ… why?" We might also wonder why he put his hand to his ear with around 50m left in the "race". If I did that, my coach would probably kick me off the team. I know that Mr. Torrence wasn't running for a team (unless Cal now wears "Loyola" across the chest), but I think the same principles should hold. Let's try to get this kind of y showboating out of running. It should not be rewarded.

just a mother of a runner 3 years ago

the coverage was great and you have to be happy for the kid, he ran the race fair, and ignore the BS. Go Puma..... Great company

big prick 3 years ago

yeah you might not need a logo on your chest to run fast, but if you want to have a roof over your head and food on the table, and become the best runner possible, you have to earn money.
Maybe you have a trust fund, but the rest of us need to survive. Quit hating, or start sponsoring runners yourself. You can put a logo of your face on the singlet, because obviously you need some attention.

BP 3 years ago

How is it a "dream" to be sponsored ?
As mentioned earlier, any ol' shoe company could have given
Torrence a contract and he'd be quite willing to sell his soul for
a few thousand bucks.
I'll give it to the kid, and the rest of you that think this is cool , you just
bought into another classy gimmick on the part of Puma's marketing team.

Take corporations out of sport, and give it back to the athletes.
Last time I checked... I don't need a logo on my chest to make me run fast.

What an awesome story

Puma mile mania 3 years ago

You wanna sell running to the masses this is how you do it!!! Put screaming cowbell ringing fans on the infield too!Puma should give all of the guys in this race a contract just for doing it! Great to see them all laughing at the end and having fun! Way to go Flo track!
