Flotrack's Jerry Drever talks with Deena Kastor on the mental side of running and what brought her to the marathon. Deena, coming off an Olympic medal in 2004, had high hopes in 2008. Her foot broke and she was unable to finish the race. She talks about the moment she new the marathon was her calling. Deena also gives the key to her "durability" and some goals for London this spring.

All the best to Deena and congrats on her win, but to those who cite the Eastern European women who are running very competitively in their late 30's and beyond- those performances are among the most suspicious in the sport. In confidence, I'm sure Deena would agree.

SanDiegoGirl,

sorry a portion of the interview was cut off. i met with Deena the day before the Rock N Roll race in Phoenix but i didn't get the video up until tuesday. Only portion you missed was my wishing her good luck on her race "tomorrow" which didn't seem relevant 2 days after the race :) hope you enjoyed the interview, i really did, she is an amazing person

2004...she had to much left.....she should of had the silver.....to much left in the tank!

Would Love to see Kara, Shalane, Kara's teammate, and her in the 10k

Agree with SanDiegoGirl! Women in their mid and late 30's are winning many of the major marathons! Mikitenko at 38 won London and ran 2:19 the previous year. I think she ran sub 31:00 10k on the roads last year. I believe she is ranked #1 in the wold by the IAAF. Tomescu Dita went gold in Beijing. Back in 04 Colleen de Reuk won USA Olympic Marathon trials at age 40. Ludmila Petrova at age 42 has been second in NYC for the last 2 years, beating Kara Goucher in 2008. Etc....

As long as you take care of yourself. Monitor your body and stay mentally strong and motivated, u can run competitive times until around age 40.
....Being very athletically gifted also helps....
....Doing what you love, and living out your dreams and passions helps even more.........

She ran 1:09 for a half marathon the other day in Las Vegas! Great way to start off the year! On the right day she probably will get a personal best. Running fast times 3 months out from London is a great indicator!

Deena sets a professional and athletic standard that any runner should aspire to!

Moooorrrrrrre!!! There's obviously more to this interview, it cuts off so sharply. Please don't leave us hangin' for too long, Flo!

Thanks to Flotrack for getting a sit-down interview w/ someone of Deena's calibur, and like JP said, thanks to Deena for doing it.
On a side note: I always gotta chuckle at people who say Deena Kastor is "nearing retirement"... ummmm... have you ever paid much attention to elite female marathon running? I speaking very broadly of course, but female LONG distance runners seem to peak in the mid-30s. And I know everyone always throws out the Tomescu-Dita card when talking about the prowess of mid to late-30's female marathoners... but that's because it's true. Deena is in her prime right now, and depending on Kara's potential maternity schedule, and if/when Shalane finally decides to move up to the full-monty, Deena is USA's #1 hope for another Olympic medal in 2012. And she's equal to the task. (I'm a huge Deena fan, if you can't tell :o) A showdown between Deena and Paula in London 2012... OMG, I get the chills just thinking about it!! Can't wait!

Deena is fantastic competitor and clearly mentally tough to come back from such a devastating injury (in no way 'little' Mr Drever).
I've listened to a lot of her interviews too and I appreciate how thoughtful and articulate she is...this may not come across since she seems on edge during the interviews but who wouldn't ?(did he >laugh< when she mentioned her foot swelling up on the bus driving her back to the birdsnest?)

Thanks Deena for making yourself available for these interviews. Best of luck in London

No ways. 2 years ago

If she becomes a mom her marathon times will improve. Wierd but seems to happen, dont know why..

CAR NAC 2 years ago

My prediction. 2:26 in London. I believe that this will be her last competitive marathon. She has been a great role model and an excellent ambassador for the sport and she will continue to do that. However, she will do it in a different capacity. She will become a mom within the next 18 months.
