Flotrack's Jerry Drever talks with Deena Kastor on the mental side of running and what brought her to the marathon. Deena, coming off an Olympic medal in 2004, had high hopes in 2008. Her foot broke and she was unable to finish the race. She talks about the moment she new the marathon was her calling. Deena also gives the key to her "durability" and some goals for London this spring.

All the best to Deena and congrats on her win, but to those who cite the Eastern European women who are running very competitively in their late 30's and beyond- those performances are among the most suspicious in the sport. In confidence, I'm sure Deena would agree. |

Agree with SanDiegoGirl! Women in their mid and late 30's are winning many of the major marathons! Mikitenko at 38 won London and ran 2:19 the previous year. I think she ran sub 31:00 10k on the roads last year. I believe she is ranked #1 in the wold by the IAAF. Tomescu Dita went gold in Beijing. Back in 04 Colleen de Reuk won USA Olympic Marathon trials at age 40. Ludmila Petrova at age 42 has been second in NYC for the last 2 years, beating Kara Goucher in 2008. Etc.... |

She ran 1:09 for a half marathon the other day in Las Vegas! Great way to start off the year! On the right day she probably will get a personal best. Running fast times 3 months out from London is a great indicator! |

Deena is fantastic competitor and clearly mentally tough to come back from such a devastating injury (in no way 'little' Mr Drever). |

My prediction. 2:26 in London. I believe that this will be her last competitive marathon. She has been a great role model and an excellent ambassador for the sport and she will continue to do that. However, she will do it in a different capacity. She will become a mom within the next 18 months. |
