David Rudisha breaks the 800 meter World Record in Berlin with a 1:41.09. The record formerly held by Wilson Kipketer was thought to be one of the toughest records out there. This is Rudisha's second time running 1:41 in 2010. Only Kipketer had run under 1:42 twice before this season.

your comment would make sense if it were rudisha who had spent the last 13 years trying to get the 800 world record. rudisha is BOUND to break 1:40. He was at 1:14 at 600! can you believe that? The impenetrability of the 1:40 barrier is as mythical as the 4:00 mile.you really have no clue what you are taking about. high school kids can break the four minute barrier but not even the best in the world are able to get close to sub 140. dont get too excited yet, tho i would love to see a 140 happen in the near to middle future |

These 1:41 guys have a lot of trouble in championship races when the bugles are on the line. Look at the previous 2 WR holders, Coe and Kipketer. Neither of them won Olympic gold despite being the heavy favorites. They think they are so damn good that they can kick off the last 200m but during a slow race EVERYONE can kick hard from 200m.I dont know about any of this, "Historian", considering Kipketer was incredibly dominant during his career. '95, '97, '99 Gold Medals at the world championships at 23, 25, and 27 years of age respectively. A silver medal at Sydney, and a Bronze in Athens at 28 and 32 respectively, when well past his prime?? Thats pretty good, and shows pretty amazing ability to run the rounds of a multi heat race such as the 800. I would say Kipketer was just unlucky to have been born when he was. A little too old in Sydney to be at his peak for 800 (note: i know nothing about the 800 and when someone is in there prime to race an 800, i'm just making conjecture). It looks like '96 was Kipketer's year to win gold in the olympics, but once again was unlucky to not be given the ability to run in those olympics due to him switching his nationality to Danish. In regards to Coe, just shut up. |

has anyone noticed that at the end of the race the WL time given is 1:42.98? Did someone forget that Rudisha has already run 1:41.5 thisyear? |

Nonono, he was comparing the awe a sub 1:40 800m instills to us now as a sub 4:00 mile instilled on people many years ago. It was once thought no one could ruin a sub 4:00 min mile...The 1:40 800m could be the same? |

I think a mental barrer is when they get pretty close to it and not berak it, lets say a mile in 4:00.1 or 4:00.5, maybe thats a mental barrier but being 1.09 seconds away from it, it's a physical barrier.Agreed. In the case of sub-1:40 for 800m, at 1:41.09, there is a lot more to it than a mental block. The record has been sub-1:42 for nearly 30 years, and hasn't made much progress in that time. The progression has stalled moreso than nearly every other record...at least the records which aren't questionable due to doping, faulty wind meters, etc. |

Guys who can run 1:44 after making it through several rounds of 800's can definitely challenge Rudisha. World record times in a single time trial do not mean that you will beat the rest of the world after several rounds over a couple days. |

@lol r u stupid dont ever compare 140 barrier which no has run to 400 min mile which many ppl have doneRelax, child. He wasn't comparing the 1:40 barrier to the 4:00 mile in terms of difficulty. He was saying that the 1:40 barrier is a mental barrier, just like the 4:00 mile was, before Bannister, Landy, and others broke through it. |

Sure looked like Uceny was sandwiched and then forced into the rail by Burka who was stuck outside of Uceny in lane one. Conveniently took out Anna (Pierce) too. Uceny has looked very good lately. Hope no one was hurt. Rowbury didn't finish either. Prize money is important to everyone, but referees may be needed. Watching Ejigu protect Defar in Qatar, Americans may need to learn some team strategy. |

Not to defend Bolt's court jester antics but he did smash one of the most outstanding performances of all time - MJ's 200 in Atlanta 1996 - twice. |
