Flotrack's Kevin Selby sits down with Ryan Hall last week to talk about his decision and preparation for the 2010 Chicago Marathon. This will be Hall's first time in Chicago and he'll be looking to run fast!

Ryan has now announced he's out of Chicago this year.
There is some discussion below about getting 'mojo' back etc...
Whereas it's true that his trials race and London 2008 were Magnificent performances...his Boston/NY/Boston sandwhich was NOTHING to sniff at.
Those three alone make a very good career. Ryan has always had Mojo and with a little break I hope to see another small miracle from him and team Mahon sometime in the future...

I like the pixie dust analogy to summarize BigFanBut's theory.
Although it sounds weird I think there is actually lots of data to support the pixie dust theory IN THE MARATHON.
Diffferent racers get different amounts of dust but yah, once you've spent it, you're never quite the same. Hall has had 7 marathons and yes that's starting to get to the point where you might worry you're running out of magic.

Hmmm...well perhaps I did not state that well. I am not a fan of Ryan's racing style (or atleast his style as of late). Obviously Hall is uber talented, extremely hard working and a great guy, and as a person I have the upmost respect for him. But the way he races his marathons just does not impress me, perhaps in the future he will actually race his marathons, perhaps this is just a phase...but I am still, as of now, very unimpressed with the way he races, not his times, not his work ethic, just the way he chooses to race.

Omygosh, I think the notion that somehow Hall "spent his future" in '08 is laughable. What -- athletes have a finite supply of racing pixie dust or something?! I think you'd have a tough time finding data to support your theory that years-old hard efforts are sapping him today.

I hope Ryan has got his mojo back and can pop another big race this fall.
I gasped when Mahon said they were doing London between the trials and the olympics. Now I know he popped a 2:06 which is amazing but he was certainly in a big hole for the olympics as a result and I think he may still be climbing out of it.
Their thinking is that he just has to get back into another fast race and I hope that's right but man...it could also be that they just went to the well once too often there in spring 2008 and they spent too much of his future.
We'll see.
I love his optimism and I actually like his racing philosophy. Yes it bucks the traditional wisdom that you have to keep in contact with the leaders at all times to win...which in a way shows even more balls than to mindlessly stick your nose into every surge...
I'd love to see the Ryan of '07-'08 again

I think you are right on here! He's got what it takes to make a huge impact on how the race could unfold but needs to potentially shift his game plan. He has been incredibly patient in the past and has not followed the wild and frenetic surges that can make others blow up and drop out. But then again, if he's too timid, he runs the risk of losing contact once again and making that vain effort in the last mile or so. The "American Record" could be his, if he can just unwind his effort cautiously and surge when it really means something.

The Chicago Marathon is arguably one of the best not only in the United States, but the world. Run my hometown course fast bud!

Im pretty sure Hall is trying to impress you. NOT!...Have you ever run 2:08 or 2:06?

So what if he never wins a major title, he is still one of the best, a definite posium contender, a potential winner.... unlike you.
Being a competitive runner myself, I actually wish the best for the American elite, anyone who can mix it up with the best of the best deserves respect.

Im a bit more skeptical! Ryan will no doubt do very well in Chicago but another 2:08ish performance just isnt going to cut it there. He will need to PB for sure to be in the thick of things. For all the hard work that hes put in, he definitely deserves more! Running his own race should also include more of a taking no prisoners attitude and with a heck of a lot less watch glancing!

Can't say Ive ever been too impressed by hall, this does little to change that, hopefully one day Hall will get out there and actually Race a marathon, but sounds like he still has that "run for time" mind set, I don't ever expect him to do much more than run some good times, probably won't ever win a major marathon, for sure won't medal in the Olympics. Hope he can figure out how to race and not just do a glorified time trial.

I was just checking on Ryan's younger brother Chad on the U C Riverside athletic site. He looks more fit than I've ever seen him before. They just ran their early meet up in Reno, which he won. It's getting so you can't tell them apart any more!

Love it and so excited to see him fly. Does this mean we will see a WOW with Hall this week? Please!!! I know you wouldn't do an interview up there and not get some training footage, right?
