Flotrack's Best of 2011 - Biggest Surprise of the Year!
(if video does not load, click here to watch)
Race Video: The surprise of the year happened when Oregon redshirt Junior Matt Centrowitz Jr. took home the bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu. Centro looked smooth through the rounds but no one really considered him a strong medal contender. However, Centro showed us just how good he is and how much of a threat he'll be come 2012!

Sept. 3, 2011: Asbel Kiprop becomes the first Kenyan to win gold in the men's 1500m at a World Championship. American Matt Centrowitz wins bronze.

Team orders with 300 to go? The same thing happened at the 1980 Moscow Olympics in the mens 5000 with the Ethiopians.
Can't be proven but very easy to spot.

Great run by Centro!

for Centro was 35.7

The surprise: Ciaran O'Lionaird goes from a 3:48 to a World Championship finalist in one year.

Dan Knewitz, your assesment of 1:49 for last 800 is very close. Best I can tell Centro passed 700 meters in 1:46.6, which his finishing time of 3:36 flat would make for a 1:49.5 last 800. Like I said earlier I thiink his last 400m was 51 low to 51.5, which would make the penultimate 400 about 58 seconds. Like you said not really pushing. I think Centro is a better closer than all around 1500m runner. That being said I'd like to see what he could do in a time trial atmosphere. (going out in 1:53 or so.) I don't think he'll ever break 3:30, but he's a player in major championship races.

I could not find the splits from the finish line anywhere, but based on where they appear to be at when they pass through 700m the last 800m must have been about a 1:49 high for Centrowitz, and it is important to remember that he didn't even start pressing right at that point either.

I'm a bit confused by your comment topper harley. He gets bronze in a race with ELITE 1500 guys. Yes, it was a tactical race that I think he ran perfectly, other than the box in. I'll take the bronze.

Congrats CENTRO! Representing Maryland well.)
GUESS YOU DIDN'T READ MY POST MORE CLEARLY. SOMEONE ELSE SAID THAT HE'S NOT 100% SOLD ON CENTRO.
I JUST ASKED HIM WHICH AMERICAN MILER/1500 RUNNER IS HE SOLD ON.
PERSONALLY, I THINK CENTRO IS AMERICA'S BEST. HE MAY NOT HAVE THE FASTEST AMERICAN TIME. BUT IN CHAMPIONSHIP RACES, LIKE THE ONES WE'VE SEEN THIS PAST WEEK, HE DEFINITELY PUTS IT OUT THERE AND ALSO HAS A KICK.

Future looks bright for Centro!

I'm Happy he's happy wining the bronze but I must say I like Centrowitz's form better than the two who finished in front of him, Great accomplishment! Much Much more to come from this talented young MAN.

Centro and Jenny B (or simpson) did exactly what is necessary to medal: Run the times they are capable of at the times that matter! Congrats Centro, adding to the comeback of American 1500m running!

Good race by Centro. Still not 100% sold on him yet but i'm slowly getting there. He could have had a chance at winning if he didn't get boxed with 400 to go.)

Than which American 1500/miler are you 100% sold on?

amazing! he's not scared to race, not intimidated. He goes straight to the front and runs and a beautiful race. very impressive! centro 2012

great race by centro. very strong tactically speaking. what's amazing is that he ran less than 2 seconds off his PB from 2:02 pace. Last lap was about 51.5. Just awesome finishing speed. When is the last time we could say that a slow paced 1500 would benefit an American athlete? Matt may never run 3:30 but he won't have to, to compete in major championship finals. He's just 21 years old too. Great job Matt, represent Maryland!!!

Centro knows how to RACE and run rounds up there with the big guns.

this guy is a true great hope for mens american distance running. Races for the moment, not for something later. Not afraid to want it now and truely goes after it. You college guys, your international careers need to start in college not after...
