Simpson silver, Aregawi gold, and Cain finishes 10th

After a gutsy race, which saw Jenny Simpson nearly go wire to wire, the 26 year old walked away with her second World Championships medal. Simpson finished the race in 4:02.99, just .32 seconds behind winner, Abeba Aragawi of Sweden. At the gun, Simpson went straight to the lead, joined by fellow countrywoman Mary Cain—which gave the 17-year old a brief glimpse of what it’s like to lead a World’s final. The first quarter was passed in a rather pedestrian 65.73 with Simpson still leading a large group of woman. At 800m, passed in 2:13.92, Simpson was still in the front with the two Kenyans, Obiri and Kipyegon, and the Swede, Aregawi, in tow. With the bell came the World leading Aregawi’s kick, as Simpson faded to third. With 150 meters to go Simpson swung out to lane two and pushed for home. Aregawi held her lead, and the 2011 World Champion would hold on for her silver medal. With her second place finish the Americans added four medals to their count today. Though Simpson wasn’t able to run down gold, she was able to trounce a handful of women that have run 3:58 (including Faith Kipyegon’s 3:56) or better this season.
