Young runner takes center stage
Gabrielle Jennings carved a slice of history at the 2009 State High School Indoor Championships at LSU. The diminutive distance runner hails from First Baptist of Slidell, a Class C school. At 10, Jennings became the youngest person to win an award at the meet, prevailing in the Division II 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:58.90. Training for less than a year, she already is making the rest of the state take notice.
"It feels good because I know not that many other 10 year olds have the ability to do that," said Jennings of her history-making performance. "I try to give it everything I've got with each race."
Jennings burst onto the scene in the fall as she won the individual title in the Class C State Cross Country Meet.

Northshore's Justin Walker is the top seed in the Division I 55-meter dash in the Louisiana high school state indoor meet.
Walker, a senior, captured the 100 and 200 dashes at last year's Class 5A state meet at LSU. He played cornerback for Northshore's football team, which advanced to the 5A playoffs. His time of 6.5 seconds is the fastest qualifying mark among Saturday's Division I competitors.
Two other metro area athletes are top seeded. South Plaquemines' Bradley Sylveis; top seeded in the Division II 55 dash (6.4 seconds). And Karr's Jordan Sullen is the fastest seed in the 55-meter hurdles in Division I (7.74).
