National Running Day to Unite the Country Through

Events and Activities from New York to San Diego on

Wednesday, June 3

Major U.S. running organizations to host local events as part of national effort

to get Americans moving.

New York, April 1, 2009—The United States running industry today announced an unprecedented

unified effort to launch the inaugural National Running Day on Wednesday, June 3, to nationally

and locally promote running as a healthy, easy, and accessible form of exercise. Across the country,

the day will celebrate the benefits of running as part of a healthy and active lifestyle aimed at

combating some of today’s most pressing health issues.

Through a grassroots effort, the foremost road racing and track and field organizations from major

U.S. cities—including New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Houston, Minneapolis/St.

Paul, Little Rock, Denver, Eugene, and San Diego—in addition to national running organizations USA

Track & Field and Running USA, are encouraging Americans of all ages and fitness levels to get

out and run by hosting a variety of National Running Day activities, including professional athlete

appearances, free running events, group runs, and clinics.

This unified effort is aimed at encouraging people to lace up their shoes and invite a friend to join

them in experiencing the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of running.

“Everyone can run. That’s the message of this day,” said New York Road Runners president and

CEO Mary Wittenberg. “As an industry, we know first hand how great running is. Millions of Americans

have discovered that running is an easy way to feel better, look better, and live better.”

Runners can join in the National Running Day festivities by simply going for a run on June 3, then

logging on to the national website and social media resources at runningday.org to download an “I’m

a Runner/I Ran Today” Facebook button, interact with other runners, and find complete information.

Resources available on the site will include information on local community events with running

clubs and retailers, course-mapping tools, training tips, and other running-related information.

“This is a day to celebrate the most universal of all sports,” said USA Track & Field CEO Doug Logan.

“By taking National Running Day into the virtual realm of social networking, we’re doing even

more to expand that universe. You might be running toward a goal, running with a purpose, or

even just running away from your problems. Any reason is a good reason to run, especially on

National Running Day.”

Should have had a camera at Creswell, OR - 8 miles south of Eugene, OR. A town of 4500 people had runners and walkers out on the track and trail from 4:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. (Sixteen Hour Challenge). Nearly every kid in town ran alongside adults who were there to help people understand that running is fun. We are still adding the numbers but we accumulated well over 3000 people-miles. Many grade schoolers ran over 5 miles and loved it. Several ran 9+. One little fourth grader challenged me to a mile race - he had already run 6 miles - he hit the finish at 6:36 (he beat me by a stride and won the coveted cotton t-shirt he wanted badly.) Today, the day after NRD, the grade school principal called me and said that she has 200 kids that want to know when "those guys are going to run with them again". Success!!

Scheduled annually on the third Friday in September, (September 18, 2009 this year), the Road Runners Club of America will promote the 4th Annual National Run@Work Day. The goal of National Run@Work Day is for RRCA members and individuals across the country to host community based events that encourage people to incorporate at least thirty-five minutes of walking or running into their daily lives. A Run@Work Day event can be hosted by a running club, an individual, or a corporation. Run@Work Day events should be a running or walking event lasting at least thirty-five minutes before work, during lunch, or immediately after work. A Run@Work Day event can be as simple as taking your co-workers out for a lunch time walk or a Run@Work Day event can be an afternoon fun run designed to bring out hundreds of people in a community or a company. The RRCA encourages the American public to incorporate at least thirty-five minutes of exercise into their daily lives which can markedly improve one's overall physical health. If adults can lead by example, if companies can encourage healthy living, then together we can combat the national inactivity and obesity crisis gripping our nation and our children.

To help you plan your Run@Work Day event, the RRCA created the Run@Work Day Planning Kit and Fact Sheet. (available on the RRCA web site, http://www.rrca.org)
To help promote your Run@Work Day event, the RRCA has created a general promotional poster. To obtain a free copy of the promotional poster, send a self addressed, postage paid, legal sized envelope to 1501 Lee Hwy, Ste 140, Arlington, VA, 22209. Visit the RRCA Publication Store to order multiple Run@Work Day posters.
People hosting Run@Work Day events are encouraged to give participants a copy of the RRCA Brochure. Copies may be obtained by emailing requests to the National Office at . Be sure to include your name, address, and number of brochures you would like. A fee will apply for brochure requests over 25 copies. You can also simply download and print the RRCA Brochure to circulate.
Share information about Run@Work Day events you are planning in your community by posting information on our Run@Work Day Group on Facebook.
