Cross country is not supposed to be a factor at all. It is simply a Track and Field award. You may have years where no distance runners are included in the top-3. In fact, none of the women's finalists competed in XC last year.

How can they give an award that is supposed to recognize the top athlete in NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country, before treack season begins? Is it for a calendar year instead of an academic year?
It was for the 2008 XC season; the 2008-09 indoor season, and the 2009 outdoor season.

that all depends on how dominant field athletes will be. it's just a coincidence hooker and eaton are dominant the same time as jenny b and galen rupp are...

While Barringer and Rupp are certainly deserving of this award, if they want this award to be taken seriously in the future, they'll need to award it to non-distance runners as well.
