Flanagan sets 10K mark

U.S. women's record cut by 15.83 seconds

North Carolina graduate Shalane Flanagan smashed the American record in the women's 10,000 meters Sunday night to highlight the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational and give the elite distance meet its third American mark in the last seven years.

Though she had not run 10,000 meters on the track before, Flanagan was supremely confident and came to Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field expecting to take down Deena Kastor's American record of 30 minutes, 50.32 seconds, set at this meet in 2002.

And take it down Flanagan did in stunning fashion in 30:34.49 as she turned back New Zealand's Kim Smith (30:35.54) on the last lap. Smith set national and Oceanic records with her second-place time and Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego in third obliterated her own NCAA collegiate record by more than 30 seconds at 31:25.45.

"This is known as a really great distance meet," Flanagan said. "I felt like it was my night. I went in with the intention of getting (Kastor's record). There are so many variables that have to come together and tonight they all came together."

These guys aren't pros, they are doing it for our enjoyment. We don't have to pay to view the races and it is better to see them than not at all. Also note the .org, not for profit.

I'm sorry, but as much as I am begging for LIVE coverage with all of the rest of us PASSIONATE track and field fans, FloTrack has got to do something about raising their "announcers" to a decent level of professionalism . . . Their inept and disorganized coverage and lack of even the most modest of basic knowledge bases in some races was downright pathetic.

I think Molly Huddle found her event for the olympics, easily making the A standard, outside of Kara Goucher and Jen Rhines the race is wide open.
