Bill Rodgers is one of the nicest people you will ever meet not to mention a world class elite runner. He was possibly experiencing mixed emotions of the death of Ryan Shay at the same time of the amazing accomplishment of the new USA representation in the 2008 Olymipics.

It's shocking to that people are so critical of Bill Rodgers for such superficial and insignificant reaons. And it's nice to read the posts defending him. I'm with you--Bill is an inspiration now and always.

I agree that young runners need to learn the history of their sport. Bill Rodgers is and was my hero. I started running in the early 70s and he and Shorter were the guys that motivated me. They ran when you had to work a full time job and train and they still put up times that would impress today. We should all show respect for these men, they've earned it.

Most of you who are making negative comments about Bill Rodgers are too young to realize that he and Frank Shorter were responsible for taking the sport to where it is today. Bill is one of the kindest people any one could meet. Ryan Hall is similar to Bill in many ways. Nice, soft-spoken, but would simply destroy the competition. Learn your running history.

We love you Bill! Anyone else agree that Abdi is the Bill of his era? Great ambassador for the sport.

I saw in interview with Bill from 1975. He had the same spaced out demeanor and way of expressing himself. People who have interviewed him have said the same thing. It's just Bill.
