he is a bit cocky in this video... but he's the US Junior national champion now, and he ran a 4:14/8:52 double, and his record at woodward park is legendary. I dont wanna sound like im justifying his cockiness, but this kid has a lot under his belt.

German is a beast. He never said that because he forgot his spikes, he lost. when asked how he felt, he said how it was an off day for him, but he never said that if he had an on day that he would have won. Him setting a goal like the national 2 mile record is not a cocky thing to say at all. Last spring would any of you believed that a 9:08 2 miler in a few months would run a 14:24 5k and break the state course record? To be honest with you I didn't even know who this guy was until this xc season.
Big ups to German Fernandez on a great xc season.

He is a great athlete. Great athletes are also great people. I respect this guy's abilities and what he does. His words were right after a tough and stressful race so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He deserves that much. Just my opinion.

Him winning wouldnt change anything, if he won he wouldnt be humble about it and if he won i wouldnt like him anyway... cant argue with a 14:24. But I dont have to like him either way. Im entitled to my opinion, but he needs to respect his competitors, if i was racing him i would not like him at all, but i would respect his talents and his abilities.

Stop Hating..   December 18, 2007 at 7:32pm
Don't put North East runners down 'cuz of some stupid comments people make. I'm from the North East and I know this kid is legit. Sounds like a tard? He's obviously tired and a little out of it after running and getting THIRD in the NATION. Him and Chris Derrick seem like the best two candidates to get that 2 mile record, and anyone who counts him out is stupid. He didn't, at any time, blame his performance on the lack of him bringing spikes, so people need to stop saying that. He was a favorite, he didn't win, he's disapointed. That doesn't mean he doesn't respect Fout and Derrick as runners. Just because Pre didn't get first in the Olympics didn't mean he wasn't the best. Great runners don't win every race...

1) California runners are not allowed to wear spikes during the regular season. Thus, they are not used to thinking about spikes and cross-country. You bring flats to a cross-country race.
2) He was responding to questions, not making excuses. He did not say that his situation was any different than anyone else. He just said he didn't feel strong from the start, and it wasn't his day. That's not cocky, and it's not making excuses. It can not be your day and you can still win, or be your day and you can still lose.
3) How many people posting here can run 14:24 on an xc course? How many got 3rd at FLN, or even 3rd at state, or city? Some of you are not even 3rd on your team.

Well i would but im in college and dont have any high school eligibility left so sorry. And people can post whatever they want on here, thats the point of a forum, you dont have to like it. The spikes are just another stupid excuse like a hard state race... these kinds of races are post-season for everyone, so all the runners are trying to re-peak or carry their fitness through the last race, after they already tried or were sucessful at winning their state meet or NTN. So just another point to show that he is cocky and cant just admit he got his A$$ whooped!
