Wait to go german!
I ran against german in cross country his sopre year and he whooped even then... we've continued to follow his track/xc success and have waited for him to make this type of history. I can't wait to see what he'll do in the future. I feel honored to say I have ran with him.

awesome commentary by the way....

Congrats to German, and thanks for the great video and commentary. It is great to see history made. What most of you do not get to see is that he is a great guy. I met him as a substitute teacher, and found him to be friendly, humble, and interesting - kind of rare these days. I hope we see more great things from him in the future - Go German!

what makes this even crazier is that he ran 8:34.40 in a high school only race, i believe when nelson set the record of 8:36 he ran against professional at some Pepsi meet. Nonetheless, incredible race and who knows maybe he'll win a national championship as a freshman at Oklahoma State; with the amount of talent this man has, the sky is the limit for this outstanding individual. C. Derrick will still always be number one in my heart

While the Kenyan's have run faster at the same age (albeit their ages are disputable) there is a reason this record stood for 29 years. This kid looks like Salazar running. Runs smooth, but looks like he's about to sit down in a big comfy chair. Awesome performance. And sorry, the announcing was second rate, although I don't announce for a living so it is what it is.

i'm sorry to break ur heart man but the Kenyans and Ethiopians are at another level of distance. their top guys are about 30- 40 secs in 5k and about a min ahead of us in the 10k. Kenyans and Ethiopians have guys at German's age that run faster ex. kipchoge. Look at Bekele and haile!! when they were young they ran fast times. haile once ran a 10k in 28:03 at the age of 18!! however dont get me wrong german will be a great USA runner one day. he will indeed have a great career in the future and has a chance of being one of the best distance runners the us will ever have.

Very gutsy performance, especially because of the weather conditions (very windy? conditions can mess up the pace). Smart by not going out too hard (4:13ish-4:14ish). Very evenly paced ("slow" lap 65.7, fast {last} lap 63.06, average lap 64.49). Negative split miles of 4:19.5 and 4:14.9! German es el hombre! (German is the man!)

Ritz Fan   June 20, 2008 at 8:20pm
This is a very good time... and not to discount this accomplishment... but when Ritz ran 8:44 he was truly alone in hot and humid conditions. After the first lap he had 10+ meters on the field. 2nd place was 8:58 in that race. Fernandez definitely had company today. Ritzenhein set the bar for the resurgence of high school running and success breeds success. To say that this race was the "most anticipated high school race in history" is a drastic overstatement and only so because of the coverage running currently gets on the internet with much thanks to the BIG 3 of the class of '01. In the fall of 2000 three American Olympians faced off in cross country. That was probably the best high school only race in history. Since then the accomplishments speak for themselves. American record in the mile. American born marathon record. Third in the world cross junior race. Olympians at 1500, 10,000, 2xMarathon.

"Blue Collar Runner" means that you were nothing in high school and became something in College not that you just run from the front.
