charles mitchell, that is one of the most ignorant posts i've ever seen. galen is a tremendous athlete and i wish him the best. quit crying about him taking other spots. he ran the 5 as a rust buster/tune up for the 10.

Flotrack Fan July 2 at 10:39pm.
I agree w/ Bush League. If he's not even going to be in the final maybe, then why did he want to win the semifinal. In fact, why did he even run the 5K if he was going to focus on the 10K? Just taking spots from other perfectly okay runners that may have a PR 10 seconds off of his, and he may think that he's so much better than them to be able to run in events like he owns them.

So what if he gets a little excited when he does well. Has anyone ever notice what Tiger Woods does when he does well? Think about it.

Do The Right Thing June 30 at 1:28pm.
He should line up and run the 5k and suprise everyone, including me. He owes to the guy that he bumps out of the final to line up and run the 5k. Because if he doesn't run the final, then there will be an open spot because they (USATF) do not fill lanes due to "scratches" only for DQ's.
Do the right thing, and run it.

I thought it was probably not the right move to hold up the number 1 for winning in a semi-final. That being said, I think we should give a break he was excited to be in front of the home crowd again and the crowd was going nuts down the homestretch, so I think he just got caught up in the moment. Let's not pretend we know what kind of person he is or isn't based on what is fairly trivial in the grand schem of things

damned pretty freaking harsh dude

Tegankamp,Webb, and Hall have shown that they can compete well internationally

Charles Mitchell June 29 at 8:53pm.
he is a jerk. he got trained by a private coach, he trains with pros and not the actual oregon team and he lives in an altitude house. yet cross nationals he gets beat by a guy who just run his balls off and now he gets pumped for winning a semi? not cool. not cool at all. when guys run the semi just to qualify that in the final they go for broke you dont showboat in the semi. for a kid who ran all over europe over the spring season and not even being a oregon student he should show more class. he is not the next pre and i cant wait to see him not make the olympic team in any event.
#29
Bush League June 29 at 2:39pm.
just so there's no confusion, he still sprinted ahead and bumped a guy out, he should of just slowed up or let the top 6 guys go, because if he's not planning on running the final, then take a chance from another runner? not thinking ahead and just doing it in classic Oregon showboat style
#28
Anonymous Coward June 29 at 2:28pm.
he doesn't have to declare for the finals, there's no such thing, I work with people in charge of those decisions and experts, he bumped a guy out of the finals if he chooses not to run, they DO NOT fill lanes because someone scratches, sorry but what Galen did was bush league because he didn't think of the consequences, they thumbs up or whatever doesn't matter, the fact is he ran to first and bumped the 6th place guy at the time out of finals, real class

Relax Yall June 28 at 9:12pm.
I meant make him seem like a "y american" if he were to gloat internationally
#26
Relax Yall June 28 at 9:11pm.
this dude is very talented, but i think people are overreacting about the way he acted in the moment, does anyone remember what webb did in sacramento in 04 and last year in indianapolis, screaming at the end of the race. did anyone call him out on that?

I guess its okay to do it on US soil, but if he were ever in a position to win internationally and he gloated it would just make him seem like a "y American". hes been racing on the pro circiut this spring and is probably relieved to win something finally, even if it was just a heat.

All this flack because he gave a thumbs up? Get a life people.

He can run like nobody's business but at the same time he's like an obnoxious 12 y/o emotionally. It may get annoying but I like the fact that he can run 10K better than anyone in the country that's not 10 years older than him. And he is just starting to get to the point where he doesn't back down to others who give him a serious challenge. He's learning to fight for it more instead of wussing out when he can't be the runaway winner.
Hey, Rohatinsky is doing the exact same thing with the 5 that Galen is, taking up a trials spot that they didn't need. Rohatinsky is my favorite runner out there but I don't like it.
About him being like another runner "we loved to hate", Michael Stember- well it's a decent comparison. Michael Stember was worse though. The most egotistical distance guy I've seen in a decade. Couldn't stand his crap, and he never quite "made it". Rupp's probably gonna make it.

Mark and Ryan just need to tape a pocket Maglite to the top of the camera when doing interviews in the tent ;)

What have we done in the past when a football player has done something crazy in the endzone? We talked about it for a while and most of us enjoyed it. Let him have his moment as he earned it.

So what!!! people are pissed he got excited isthat a crime? when you are coming ahead of another athlete of the caliber--such as So and it's your first Olympic Trials is that wrong. He's young and emotional-I say it's agood thing-People need to be in his shoes before they crucify him like on letsrun.com
#21
Wrong Wrong June 28 at 4:18pm.
he has to declare.
#20
Rule Book Is Wrong June 28 at 3:57pm.
Rule Book you are wrong.. He does have to declare and he wont bump a slower athlete. Do your homework.. beeatch
#19
Rule Book June 28 at 3:39pm.
there's no declaring for the finals, so he doesn't really know what he's talking about, he bumped a guy out of the finals just to show off, bush league move and selfish

i bet the nose strip has some special type of ability to make rupp faster...?

RUPP IS A GOLDEN GOD June 28 at 2:03pm.
Everyone relax,, lol.. We all know it wasn't tasteful to off at the end of the prelim.... It reminds me of another runner everyone loved to hate,, Michael Stember...I just hope it fires up some of the other guys to run fast.. Galen, if you win the final then go crazy take your shirt off and run around beating your chest. throw the O sign and act like the dorky hip hop boy you seem to be.. It's all good at that point....

Flotrack - keep up the good work... lights?

Have any of you "negativos" ever won anything?? A win is a win; and it feels good. Galen is an outstanding runner and works very hard. He's not boisterous and he's a good interview. Our sport needs these type of role models so our kids don't grow up cursing to make a point. And in terms of the 5K and 10K, I'm going to guess Rupp and Salazar have been in enough competitions to know what they are doing-ya think??
#15
Goober June 28 at 12:39pm.
Just proving Galen gets special favors, this is the only video in decent lighting!

jk. Mark, but maybe you guys can score some type of portable lighting source for the rest of the meet. Interviews are awesome. Faces would be nice.

and defensive ends excessively celebrate when they sack the second string quarterback who is only playing because his team is mopping the floor with the defensive end's team (not that i care to see that kind of stuff).

bottom line is this was basically a shakeout type race for him leading into the 10k and depending on how he felt perhaps it was also a qualifying round for the 5k for him. he felt good, he's getting his confidence and he's getting track and field fans excited on his home track. it's fine to have an opinion, but is the constant bashing really necessary? maybe i just don't get it, so perhaps it is necessary?

kid is a beast! rupp is a balla

Geeez June 28 at 11:59am.
Does Flotrack have a link off letsrun now? Christ- how many of you douches wouldn't react at all when there are a couple thousand people in the stands yellin' for you. He may be dorky but give the guy a break- he's one of our best. God some of you people are douchebags. As for running the 10k fresh- he's got a week until the 10k you f-ing morons. I think it's a smart move that allowed him to get some racing in before his goal race. If he can't recover in a week then he shouldn't even be at the trials. Christ- you think his coach knows what he's talking about?

Mark From Flotrack June 28 at 11:57am.
He looks young but he is one of the hardest workers out there. There will always be haters but the bottom line is this kid can run. There have been a lot of people that receive loads of money but they squander it. At the end of the day he trains as hard as anyone and when it comes down to crunch time he does not buckle under the pressure.

Hilotee June 28 at 11:40am.
but will rogers, nobody likes people who showboat when there is no need to. rupp is a tool and we all know it.

Ron June 28 at 11:39am.
In response to "I want to be like Gaylen" He has worked his ass off to get where he is, and it looks like your grammar skills need to improve before you go and criticize real ahtletes... It's correct spelling is Galen.

so we all complain that track athletes have it rough, but when one gets taken care of we have a problem with it? the only problem is that we don't have more than we do that are taken care of the way the very elite are.

i can understand not wanting to see an athlete taunt other athletes but don't we need excitment in our sport. we need people to get the fans pumped up, we need athletes who go out on a limb. galen is racing in eugene with his fans and he felt good and gained some confidence. he wanted to give something back to them as i'm sure that the atmosphere they provided gave him a boost. i'm sure we all have our favorites and if he's not one of yours cool, but why do we constantly need to fan the flames of our sport with negativaty before they have a chance to light a fire of interest in our sport?
#7
I Want To Be Like Gaylen June 28 at 11:03am.
He has had everything given to him,, Special coaching arrangements, Nike,, two red shirt seasons.... Nobody likes a track athlete like this.... During the prelim He didn't do any work. DO SOME WORK if you're going to act like that at the finish.. And take that breath right strip off your face after the race, it looks stupid..
#6
Agreed June 28 at 10:33am.
I'd have to agree with the two guys below that its great to get a good workout in considering the 10K isnt for a long time, but the only thing that pissed me off about his race was when he started waving his arms as he neared the finish. I mean come on he won a freakin prelim, its a prelim not a flipping final, he has a right to be happy but dont be waving your arms like your hot
#5
Common Sense June 28 at 10:04am.
I have to agree with the guy below since he has that much time why not get a good effort while calming the nerves and getting used to pro tactics.
#4
Anonymous Coward June 28 at 9:43am.
Or maybe its a week before the 10k final and he wanted to get in a good workout especially one with race like conditions.
#3
Damn... June 28 at 5:47am.
Haters in the house..
#2
What? June 28 at 5:41am.
Galen is an idiot! Why would he run the 5000m and then not declare for the final to run the 10K? Wouldn't he be better off running the 10K fresh??? What a freaking idiot, I guess he is looking for a good excuse when he gets his ass kicked in the 10 K and doesn't make the team. Ffreaking idiot...oh, and nice waving of the arms you freaking . it was a prelim!!!! Salazar, what must you be thinking?
#1
JaredR June 28 at 2:15am.
take the damn breath right strip off already Galen... oh, good race. Too bad we won't get to see him run the 5 cuz i'm sure it would be a good one. Looking forward to the 10!
