- See Less - The University of Oregon track and field athlete started breaking records on a junior national and American high school level while competing for Portland’s Central Catholic High School. In 2004 he broke a 40-year-old U.S. junior record for the 5000m by almost seven seconds (13:37.91). Rupp also holds the U.S. high school record for 3000m at 8:03.57 and the U.S. junior record for 10,000m at 28:15.52.
Rupp’s collegiate career at the University of Oregon started out with a bang as he broke the 10,000m record in 27:33.48. In 2006, he became the 10th Oregon runner to win a Pac-10 title. Rupp finished second to lead the Oregon Ducks to the 2007 NCAA Men’s cross-country team championship.
Other career highlights include a 2005 USA Junior Cross Country championship, record holdings in U.S. Junior 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m, and a runner-up in the 2007 USA Outdoor competition.

i guess this yr ( in response to that article by john canzano ) rupp made it know that he's def on the road to becoming the next pre. winning the xc title, indoor 3k, outdoor 10k and 5k ( after stopping to fix his shoe and running 1:55 last 800 ). i think this yr has legitimized himself that much more, only thing left is to see what he'll do on the world stage.
Galen Rupp is a great runner and I respect him very much but if people want to compare him to legendary runners this kid doesn't even come close. If you read this article http://www.oregonlive.com/olympics/index.ssf/2008/08/dont_presume_who_galen_rupp_is.html by John Canzano you will see that this kid can't be compared to Pre. This kid doesn't look like he's hit puberty yet. Good runner but I know he has more in him. He just needs that fire
like KD said...small minds talk about people...average minds discuss events...and great minds discuss ideas. Rupp is the future of American distance running...end of story. If you hate him then go root for the Africans in Beijing.
about appearance at all. like Michigan XC said, if you are talking negatively about successful people you don't know personally, your not going to go far. you have a small mind. you also belong on myspace.
He is obviously a good guy, a great, great talent, and will do well in Bejing. But it is indeed a fact he looks like the 14 year old kid down the street. I think thats part of the resentment- we all want to look younger, go back to the innocence and happiness of youth when we all thoug we could run a world class 5K with the world ahead of us. Galen has it down and people don't like it.
This guy is a real talent and he has earned our support. He's got a great future in the sport. The haters have their own agenda and we should really just ignore them. He's got many more supporters.
Galen Rupp is a baller and one of the best runners the US has to offer (obviously). Anyone who would talk trash on him for no reason is an idiot. Leave the man alone.
Sorry, I know I shouldn't engage these kids who make childish posts, but what's up with "Gay Rupp" calling Galen Rupp a loser. The guy is 22 years old and he made the Olympic team. What have you done besides hide behind a pseudonym to post a provocative comment that makes you look like a fool, coward and a loser yourself. Let's keep it positive and, if you must, stick to constructive criticism. Letrun.com may be a better place to vent your insecurities.
Great interview Galen. clearly things are working. and its like KD said after getting 4th in the 800: great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and small minds discuss people. sounds like you are busy kickin butt and others not so much...
to all the people talking about oregon winning the national championship, i know you guys are all distance runners so you don't know that events other than 800-10k exist, but oregon's ashton eaton, who will be a junior next year, won the decathlon at ncaa's this year and will be a heavy favorite next year so there's 10 more points barring a disaster. kind of a moot point since as stated rupp/wheating have almost no shot at doubling, but oregon is definitely a team to look out for in the future with a lot of good young guys
Why do they have to be wasting their time on soccer fields? What if they know they are good runners but don't enjoy it, and do love playing soccer? How is that a waste?
Dan Suher - How do you suppose Wheating will double when he would have to run 5 races over three days, two of the days doubling back and still throw out that he would win both finals? Think it throw a little man.
Hank went into the Grocery store and relized that his he did not love his wife and she did not love him. He took the kids that night and travelled by train to New Mexico.
To ?: He is saying in track, as a team, and you figure if they both double wheating in the 8/15 and rupp in the 5/10 (assuming he is back) thats 40 points, perhaps the double for rupp is less realistic so lets say 30 points, then add in a few more points from acosta and some others and I think a team title which normally takes around 60 points is fairly realistic, or at the very least a podium finish.
i like him a lot more after seeing this interview. despite his unbelievable talent and the amount of support and help he has had he seems like a very down to earth guy. i wish him the best in beijing.
It's amazing to think how many Rupps are out there waiting to be discovered. He's clearly got the physical gifts, but he also has the mental makeup to succeed in the sport. With the support of Nike and U. of O. he will go far. While I wish every runner could receive such support, I don't begrudge the guy, as some have been doing, for taking every advantage he's offered. More power to him. This guy will do great things.
REL-- That is exactly what is happening at the High School I graduated from. They got a soccer program after I graduated and now the track program, which was very good is now very bad. Lots of kids go out for soccer and they have a hard time getting kids out for track. They do both sports in the spring. I was wondering the same thing about all the converted soccer players.
Deffinatly great that he's going to Beijing. To the others let's save the negative BS for letsrun.com not here. Plus Galen still lives near home it just so happens that home is close to Alberto Salazar who was his HS or Junior HS coach... I can't remember which. So it's not the home thing. I personally have never seen anyone not race for almost the entire season and then make the USA team. I think it was a lack of racing that got Webb.
Rupp: lives & trains like a professional, with the best in coaching and science directing his life and career.
Webb: still lives & trains like a high schooler, choosing the comforts of home over the mechanical single-mindedness of a running robot.
Nice Job Galen!
your fan always!!!!
