WOW I wish I had seen this video 3 months ago. I had the same thing happen to me at the Chicago Marathon. My left foot broke at mile 20. I was not smart enough to stop. I finished and missed qualifying for Boston because of the pain. After hearing what you had to say I can not even imagin it happening at the Olympics. I feel for you and your story. I can not wait to see you run in the next Olympics.

I would love to know how your recovery is going. Are you running yet? Did you know what caused the break?

A couple of times, she brought up that she might have avoided or 'put a band aid' on the situation of her foot. And how tying her shoes too tight might have played a role. Well i can say in my personal experience I have torn my achilles twice, and still have some inflammation from time to time. And every time, I have the lasces too tight. I have to leave them very loose. I am not sure why, But Over the years we grow up to tie our shoes tight and man, what a bad habit in hindsight. So best of luck deena, thought id share. Your not alone.I was also injured in a half marathon and forced to stop and stare at the 5k mark right in front of me.kenyans right in front of me. terrible!

Big thanks to Flotrack for putting this together.
Devastating to have watched Deena go down after 5k knowing how much of her body and soul goes into training.
I'm sure I speak for many people when I say we wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to watching her out in the races again soon.

PS I'll be getting her cookbook when it comes out too.

Hi Deena! Could you write a blog on here or something to update all of us who are wondering how you are doing and how you are feeling? It might help with the recovery process by getting your thoughts and frustrations out in the open. I am an "new" marathon runner, I find much inspiration in you and your accomplishments. I sincerely hope your healing process is off to a good start and that you will find yourself on the starting line of another fantastic marathon before you know it.

Deena, thanks for your effort and courage to represent the USA and many of us that are novice marathoners. Good luck to you in your healing and future plans. You will be successful in what ever you decide to do with all of your energy. You did well in the interview, as difficult as it may have been, sign of a great professional.

In response to the Anonymous Coward below:

If you watched the race, she tried to get up. FYI, it's not a good idea to run 20+ miles with a broken bone. A broken foot is excruciatingly painful, I'm speaking from experience here. It was so unfortunate & sad that this had to happen. She couldn't even walk, or even attempt to run.

Had a laugh at this one! Maybe this will put a smile on your face after this!

---On tightening the men's Olympic qualifying standard to 2:19:
“I think they lowered the standard to keep Deena out of the Trials,” joked Bob Larsen, the Team Running USA California coach referring to American women’s marathon record holder, Deena Kastor. Kastor met the “A” standard for the men’s Trials with her 2:19:36 performance at London in 2006.

Thank you for articulating so well why Michael is a douche bag. Deena is far from a disappointment. She is a force of nature and an inspiration to many, including myself.

I hope your ingorant criticism at least made you feel better about yourself. It certain serves no other purpose. I challenge you to put the donut down and trying to finish any race in double her time.

ANTI MICHAEL   August 21, 2008 at 9:30am
Michael,

Your ignorance is overflowing.
People get injured running, people collapse and die running. You think Ryan Shay didn't put in the proper training? We are not perfect. We break down.
Before you get critical, try training like these people do. They push their bodies to the limit. Elite athletes, as well as armchair quarterbacks like yourself, can injure your bodies at any given time without any indication.
Deena is one of the most meticulous and well prepared runners ever. She leaves no stone unturned in her training.
Magdelena is a fierce competitor. This was her dream. She trained so hard for this only to injure her knee on a bus in Beijing. FYI, if your knee is inflamed, and/or painful, it restricts movement. Running is an activity that requires movement of the knee.
I say, if you can beat them, then you have earned the right to criticize them. Until then, go work on your 23 minute 5K pr.
Why are there always jerks like this criticizing someone whose dream was crushed because their bodies gave out on them. Same thing happened with Paula Radcliffe in 04. People inherently need to be mean and judgemental to make up for their own jealousy and shortcomings.

how do you break a foot michael? don't be an ass ... anyone walking down the street any day of the week can do the same thing ... it's not a matter of training, right, wrong, or indifferent ... it happens ... period ... your comment makes it sound like you think she wimped out ... get a clue before you post

Michael   August 21, 2008 at 8:03am
You know, congrats for getting there but c'mon. How do you break your foot running? Was it too much training? Not enough proper training? I'd say it is a disappointment. As for Magdalena Lewy Boulet - dropping out as well is a disappointment. The rest of the US track and field team - disappointment.

And we say (or at least Runner's World does) American running is back? Maybe Ryan Hall and the other US men can hopefully just finish.

also water running as you know but by the way, you are awesome. 3rd metatrasal will heal better than Jones fracture.

also Exogen 4000 ASAP will help. (bone healing system from smith and nephew)
I'm sure your doctors know all abot this stuff.... best of luck! stay off your feet! take a well deserved break and come back strong.
BTW, who also IS a runner... I typed my last comment too fast.

sounds like a fracture of the fifth metatarsal....I hope it is not a Jones fracture. I am a physician who also am a runner..... I have had a stress fracture that hasn't gotten better in spite of normal bone density.

Next step, no running, hyperbarics, 20 treatments at about 2 ATA and power cranks on the bike..... No running. I hate not to run. I can't imagine how you feel.... I have missed Boston twice due to injuries...last try this year....
power cranks are really helpful. I have my first race of the season this weekend..... I'll let you know how it goes.

I've been a Deena Kastor fan since 1999 (when I first started running in high school and back when she was Deena Drossin!). You've done a wonderful job Deena, I'm proud (and amazed) by all of your accomplishments...the records, the races, and most of all the attitude you have towards running. I was able to see you run at the Olympic Trials in Boston this year and it was perhaps the greatest live running event I've ever witnessed. Thank you for setting the example of what it means to give it your best, through thick and thin. You've taught me that in the end, we are only so good as the choices we make. Thanks.

Deena Kastor after Marathon injury

Deena Kastor came into the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics as one of the favorites in the women's marathon. The beginning of the race went out slow and comfortable for most of the field. As they were nearing the 5k mark Deena was seen on the side of the road grabbing her foot. She said she "heard a pop" in her foot and could not put any weight on it from that point on. Deena was forced to stop racing. She had to ride the bus back to the Bird's Nest. Not only was she unable to compete, but she had to watch the last 23 miles of the race on this bus behind the marathon field.

Mark caught up with her yesterday to hear about the tragic turn of events.
