He did decathlons, long jump and 400s in high school

When Gary went to Worlds in 2001 he was on the 4x400m, as a 46 second 400m runner. He was at the warm-up track and noticed his build was similar to many of the 800m runners and none of the 400m runners so he decided it was time to make the switch. He ran 1:48 his first year running the 800m (2002), then moved to the National Training Centre to work with Wynn Gmitroski.

since 2002 that is f@#%ing great..it only took 6years be on top of the Canadian world..f@#%ing great.
