There is the argument that there should be a permanent spot like baseball. Omaha has built a great park and people come every year. I think that is a valid point, also playing devil's advocate.

There's other xc courses out there, I don't think it's fair the race should be in terra haute every year. How about Oklahoma State's? How about kansas again? how about in the mountains? Switch it up a little bit, in D2 it's on a 10 year rotation.

This course was the culmination of hard work and dedicated individuals who were and still are able to provide a world class cross country course. As far as the trails to the west, I believe that the trailer park has been rezoned to be made into a park since the river flooded. Any other Sycamores out there know about that?

I think Iowa State had a cross country course before Indiana State. Iowa States is actually really nice, there was just a really cold national meet there and since then I don't think anybody wants to go back for nationals.

Trust me....NIKE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE XC COURSE in Terre Haute, IN. I do know they pay a course fee to run the NIKE regional meet there, but I do not know how much they pay. I have been told that they dont even wont to what Brooks does for the meet. I am sure the folks at ISU have contacted them.

I thought Nike had someone out there at least last year to get it ready for the NTN regional?

Not a true XC course? I tae it you have never run the thing before! The guy that takes care of was NOT hired by NIKE, the city has hired him. THe course keeps getting better and better. Turst me Indiana State has some tricks that they have and will put in place the next couple of years.

The trails are pretty cool out on the west side of the Wabsh River, but you have to go through a pretty bad trailor park to get to it. The trails back there are pretty cool though, the surface is almost like a fine lava rock. Makes you feel like you are running in Kenya or something. As for the course, there is some guy hired by Nike who takes care of it throughout the season, so he is the one keeping it in shape I believe. Also about the moguls, have you seen the spot along the backstretch at around the 1 mile marker? There are a few little rolling things that are slowly getting deeper as stuff settles underground. I think that they are trying to fill them up though.

No offense to Mr McNichols as I think he has done an absolutely amazing job making Terre Haute a great place for XC. However the course to me isn't true "cross country" It spectator friendly for sure. But man they need to put some divits out there. A few moguls in there, mud pits or something. This thing is nearly as fast as running on the road.
With that said I want to re-iterate that Mr McNichols has done an awesome job. Would love to see this trail system they got going.

John McNichols, ISU

Coach McNichols of Indiana State University has had a vison for Terre Haute, IN for over 20 years and this vision is starting to take shape. Coach McNichols wants to make Terre Haute, IN into the Cross Country Capitol of the US and the World (He has not said this......yet.). Terre Haute, IN has held XC nationals six times and they just got awarded the 2009 race held on the Levearn Gibson Course, one of the few "cross country only" courses in the US. Terre Haute, under McNichols' guidance, is currently making over 40 miles of trails to promote the sport with the locals in the community. McNichols has even bigger plans for Terre Haute, XC and Indiana State University and in this interview he talks about them...
