From TVNZ: "she withdrew just after the 30km mark, stricken with a sore throat and having felt ill for the past few days."

Tony's right. The main reason Mark ran 2:36 is because Kim Smith said he could. The whole way he was thinking, "Can't let Kim down." What an irony that Mark ran well and Smith didn't. I hope she didn't get injured.

So Kim Smith could conceivably own every NZ record from 1500 to marathon. WOW.

NZ Women's Marathon Record - there are at least two possible answers:

2:28:17 Lorraine Moller 01 Aug 1986 Edinburgh SCO
2:26:46 Allison Roe 20 Apr 1981 Boston
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/wmaraok.htm
Boston might not meet strict course rules for records (slight downhill and point to point), but most people would consider it counts as a NZ 'best' time if not a record.
Then there is this one...
2:25:29 Allison Roe 25 Oct 1981 New York City
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/wmarano.htm
Considered a world record at the time, but it seems the 1981 NYC marathon was later found to be a short course.
Good luck Kim.
