No set plan/formula is correct, every athlete is different ... "our system" does NOT identify or develop marathoners ... we have 300 million people in USA and we need to take chances and get the 28+ min college 10k male runner racing earlier over 26 miles to gain the experience ... oh yeah, Geb was ready alright!

Are we going to get any interviews of James Carney. It seems from the list of Americans, both Carney and Rohantinsky are being left out.

Cushmace3, you must remember though, Geb began running and in an indirect way, "preparing" for distance running at a much earlier age than the majority of Americans do. That's what I took from Tom's comment, and I have to agree. Any time you have someone who has been running 50+ mpw since around the age of 10years old competing against someone who started running at the age of 14-15 in HS and waited till they were 17-18 to run 50+mpw, you're going to see that the one who built up the volume earlier will be better prepared, especially for races such as 10ks, 1/2 marathons, and marathons.

This is to Tom Flemng. I am not a huge defender of the American system either. But I don't think there is a set formula for when to start the marathon. Geb is the world record holder and he had 2 olymic golds and 4 WC's gold and multiple world records before he ran his first marathon. When your ready your ready.

I believe the next NYC Marathon Champion is in High School somewhere in America! The US college system doesn't allow our young runners to run the marathon event early enough ... you have to start the international marathon athlete at an earlier age ... to gain experience and develop an athletes max endurance needed for racing 42k's. Higher mileage/volume is needed at an earlier age, so to help the American distance program catch up to the Africans!
My best wishes to all the American hopefuls this Sunday ... GO USA!
