Flag is awesome, but kind of tough in the winter. Boulder gets nicer days in winter and more chances to get out on trails, but not as high up and nowhere to retreat to like Sedona or Phoenix close by...

Yes! Flagstaff is the greatest place to train, winters are tolerable and the spring/summers are always worth waiting for. Go NAU XC!

ahh... I love and miss this place it really is a special and unique place. I went to NAU and videos of flagstaff make me feel like I want to go back. Winters are actually not bad at all. You only get snow storms once in a while, but they're actually kinda cool. The winter temps are really mild and not at all intrusive to running. Plus you have Sedona about 20 miles away where there is no snow if you don't want to miss a day because of the snow. Flagstaff is awesome.

But January was in the 50s. Because of the sunny skies even if the air temp is 30 it can feel much warmer in the sun.

flagstaff has pretty mild winters compared to most snowy places. I have lived in flagstaff the last 15 years and the coldest i've seen it get is -12. But, that only happened once and it doesn't usually dip below the teens at the very lowest.Usually, into the 20s or 30s dueing the day.

Winter in Flag

This winter Flagstaff has got hit pretty hard with snow, which throws some challenges in training. McMillan Elite, which is based in Flagstaff, is still running hard and working around it.
