technique work. breaking down the run, the plant and the vaulting action into pieces and then putting it together. It helps the athlete cue in on specific aspects of their event. As distance runners, we are somewhat fortunate we don't have a large amount of cues we have to be concerned with, not that we don't have our fair share. However, field events (shot, discus, jumps, vault, etc) and the sprinting (incuding relays and hurdles) events have many more technical aspects that can influence performance so greatly that missing a proper plant or being off on a misstep can be the difference between gold and silver or no medal at all. Just ask the USA 4x100m relay teams.

Interesting. What exactly does a technical session consist of?

p o'sullivan- it's hard to catch, but at the very end of the video he says that he had a technical session right after and is about to go jump... so pushing the weight session would serve no purpose... whatever he was doing, i'd say he did it the correct amount... olympic record.

I'm going to go ahead and say that you don't win Olympic gold with mere technique. I wouldn't make an absolute judgement on this guy's ability based on this. The workout isn't entitled "Maxing Out: Steve Hooker's best lifting."

Having done this type of workout and the mid-distance workout you showed below. The mid-distance one is harder. Way harder! Love the drills man. How about a video with about 50 drills on it so we don't have to buy the DVD:)

Dude,
That's it! That's all he does for weights. I'm in the wrong event. Dude was acting like he was power lifting tons of weight. I'm an old fart distance runner and can throw that around like nothin'. He must make up for it with killer technique in the vault.

Right on with the workouts especially for runners who don't go further than 50 meters ...i.e. jumpers - props to flotrack for the dirty on a smaller clan of movers and shakers

yea, HR montior?

and having a distance runners "weight workout" would probably not be terribly common. I've read that some of the pros don't even get into the weight room except for core work. There was one flotrack did with Sarah Jamieson and then there was the Lukezic Workout. Both in Season 1. Check those out.

Dan
Most strength training sessions for runners are usually circuit training sessions which is based off the strength and endurance concept, so it is best to complete one lift set before moving to the next set, then you would usually repeat the process all over again. This was also probably the reason why he was wearing a heart rate monitor. I mean you can change it up however you feel but thats just usually the idea behind circuit training (it looked as if he circuit trained a certain muscle group before moving to a different circuit but that could also be from editing), but I have never attempted the pole vault so I couldn't tell you if PV strength training is better by circuit training or by heavier weight sessions like sprinters.

Is it best to move between lifts with each set as opposed to doing a single lift in its entirety before moving on to the next one?

Also, thank you Flotrack for showing a weightroom workout. I love analyzing this as well as the Trey Hardee workout. I'd love to see a mid-distance or distance runner's weightroom workout. Maybe in the future?
