It's interesting that he works with Jack Daniels. I remember reading the article in Running Times where Fam says that one of his biggest motivators was when Jack told him that he probably won't be that great of a runner. At the time, Fam was in high school.

Fam works with George Watts and works with Jack for his altitude sessions. Started working with him through the altitude center. Looks like he went up early this year. If you watch the video there are multiple edits were Jack was speaking. I think Fam mentioned Saucony to help bring people up to speed on what he is doing now. He said this was an experimental phase for him (typical post Olympics) not a specific buildup he was using Jack as a reference. I believe he is leaving the steeple behind.

I just checked his site, it says he is coached by George Watts. But he said in 2007 working with J.D. helped him run faster.

So does J.D. just do the science side of working with Fam?

I have a ton of respect for J.D. and used to be a big supporter of Fam but this interview kind of turned me off.

Fam just seemed a bit insincere and did not listen, just waited for his turn to talk. I still hope he does well, because I like his wildness on the track but I also see why/how he pissed off Adidas.

It's great to see Fam's enthusiasm! Great runner and attitude. Jack Daniel's is the man. I always get the feeling he already knows what someone is going to run before it happens. He is so calm and is already thinking ahead. He probably didn't say much about the race because he wanted Fam to figure it out and stick to the plan.

he mentions mike smith doing like 40. Is that the same mike smith who used to run for Mcmillan Elite? It would make sense being in flagstaff, and all.

I like Fam but what's the point of having a coach/program if you don't follow it? His approach seemed ad hoc in terms of pace and mileage. He didn't mention doubles as a way to increase his mileage, just long run after long run. So much talent, but Fam's famous free spirit may hurt him in the end. Face it, he doesn't have much competition in steeple, at least not domestically. His road racing competition is much more fierce.

Hang on a second. . . at the end of the video, JD says something along the lines of "no one else in my family can handle wool on their body, they have to have something under it. Not me, though."

Did Jack Daniels just admit to all of flotrack he was going commando that day?

Big fan of Jack Daniels but he didn't really say much in this interview in terms of coaching and what went wrong in Fam's race. Just kind of nodded his head and said "Yeah," while Fam was giving us the low-down of his race and what he wanted to do in terms of training.

I would have liked to hear more of Jack Daniels talk, but I guess that's why I bought his book.

If anything could be emphasized here it is Fam's attitude towards having a bad race. It is so awesome that he can step back from this and say that in spite of being in great shape, having great runs, and thinking he was ready to take names he didn't perform up to par, but it didn't matter! Sometimes that just happens! I see too many runners, especially collegiate runners, get so mentally wrapped up on one poor race that all of their quality training goes for nothing simply because they can't cope with a bad performance. I love that Fam looked back to see what might have impacted his race, but ultimately is just looking towards the next one.

Wash your hand Fam . . . I once saw a kid spit towards the infield at an indoor meet (Cornell) and hit those wool pants.
The guy came over and apologized to Jack afterwards.

Big Fan of fam, but at USA XC I was hoping he would to take it out hard like he does the steeple. Instead he doesn't run his race and finished badly. On the track I hope he runs more 3 and 5k track races and does his thing...his style of front running hard charging with wreckless abandon fun to watch...GO FAM!.
