Again I've said it GERMAN IS BETTER. He will get beat by rob though. I'm not an idiot. Your the idiot not to realize im talking about the future not the past. The past was dependent upon rob not getting good training in for the track season, and the fact that German has the advantage of the climate in California. DO YOU REALIZE that theres actually snow in Minnesota durring the winter. German's putting in hundreds of miles in the winters and robs struggling to finish his goals for the weekly mileage in the winter. Your irrelevent of what I'm trying to prove here punk. Think before you speak.

Haha Finnerty is all right but Michael Bolland is one of the stupidest fan boys ever. German is hands down the best of the class, and has gone down as an all timer, one of the best high schoolers ALL TIME. He proved himself to easily be better than everyone else at NON, and if everything goes well, he will prove himself to be the best at xc and everything else. Finnerty is nowhere near German, and will probably be nowhere near German during cross country or track next year. Michael Bolland, your comments just make me realize what an idiot you are denying the straight up facts that German easily beat Finnerty and by a lot. Finnerty and no other high schooler in that race were going to run 8:34, or anywhere near it.

german ran the 4:00.29 1600m
equaling a 4:01.60 mile
and rob did run the 4:01.09 so technically he is a better "miler"
but we wil never know...

It was Finnerty's worst race of his life vecause Fernandez ran him into the ground, along with everyone else in that NON race. As far as Finnerty being injured alot in HS, who is to say he wont continue that trend in College?

Michael Bolland   July 26, 2008 at 8:44pm
"I'll beat him"-Rob Finnerty. He's even confident that he could beat him. If anyone of the people here on flotrack knew Rob Finnerty personally they would know for a fact that he's going to be the best on the Wisconsin team by the end of the year. He's going to do the same thing that Hassan Mead did and beat whoever Wisconsin's Chris Rombough is. Even If Rob doesn't become the top Wisconsin runner I gurantee you.GURANTEE you that he'll beat German in this upcoming CC season. German is a great runner. Rob has the drive of three Steve Prefontaines.

"He would've easily beat German"

That might be the funniest thing I have ever heard....do you know how much German has been injured in his career? He pretty much was injured his entire Junior season and was just barely racing at the end. His coach has said that he coached German really conservatively this year because of his Achilles injuries, look what he has done off of conservative trainig...Sure Rob Finnerty is really really really good...but German Fernandez is off the charts. A 4:00/8:34 double is not someone who is going to be "easily beat"....come on now, give German the respect he deserves and I'm sure Finnerty will get it as well, its not like a 4:01 goes un-noticed.

I'm not a hater I'm on Robs fricken team. HE HAD NO WINTER TRAINING. CALIFORNIANS GET AN ADVANTAGE WITH THE WEATHER ALSO. ROB, IF HE WASN'T INJURED THE WHOLE WINTER THEN HE WOULDVE BEEN TRAINING IN THE DROP DEAD FREEZING COLD. and he would've done it too. He would've easily beat German. and by the way you should learn to type or see i dont know what it was, but you missed the L in Michael.

Rob will be wayyy better than German. He had absolutely no training coming into the season. He was out for basically the whole winter with tendonitis in his calf. Rob's battled injuries his whole highschool career and finally has put in two full seasons in track and XC. If you watched him do the grueling workouts that he does like I have you would see how amazing he is. German is a great runner but I will die arguing about how rob is better.

Wide lens--it's not getting carried away, it is recognizing an 4:00/8:34 for its historical accomplishment!!! i'm sorry but whether he gets nelson's record or not is just details compared to what he actually has accomplished already and to downplay it is crazy. the fact that distance fan is talking about a "renaissance" is exactly due to the point you make about perspective...thus a revival of an activity or interest...as in, the 70s/early 80s represent a pinnacle in US running we are all hoping to reach again and go beyond.
distance fan, i agree with you. US distance running has had some nice success in recent years. i don't know why anyone who (apparently) loves running would want to tone down your enthusiasm. kinda like when you are happy and want others to be happy and someone says: stop smiling!

In the world of athletics there is only two possibilities--reality and what could've happened but didn't. I believe for Chris Derrick to run 8:35 in the 3200 at NON, reality would have to be different. For whatever reasons sub 8:40s is reserved for very very few high school runners. And that is reality.

I have to say, the German is a great runner. But i am very dissappointed that Derrick is out with mono. Im not saying that Derrick could beat German, but he could definitely push German to his full potential. While German is a great runner, we never truly got to see Derrick run a 3200 with competition. I believe that if Derrick was going to NON, German would win in a 8:33 and Derrick would be right behind in a 8:35.

Distance Fan, you list all these name but fail to mention greatest california...lol...b4 German, Ryan Hall should very well have a place in ur renaissance as he well on his way to being one of the greatest marathoners ever...and as far as the steeplers goes you can't ignore FAM last year I watch run low 13's at Mt. Sac and his event is the steeple just wait til the trials...

Distance Fan, I share your enthusiasm to a large degree, but lets put this in some perspective. Our top HSers are matching the top HSers of the late seventies and early 80s, but the depth seems to be a LOT better. German's double is the best US HS double by far, but once he breaks Nelson's record we can all celebrate a record many thought would last a lot longer. But while US HSers are doing great things, lets not get carried away with German's place in world running at this point.

this dude's splits were the same as Lagat's when he qualified for the "A" Olympic standard in the 5K. OK, so GF only ran 3200 but Lagat didn't run a 1600 before his race at Stanford. We're talking world cl runner here.

Distance Fan   June 4, 2008 at 3:44pm

Maybe we're seeing a renaissance in US distance running! Alan Webb's #1 all time mile, GF's fantastic double, Jordan, Christine, Shalane, Shannon, Lagat, Meb...what a treat for the fans! And they're all really nice people! Now if we could only find a decent steepler...
Thank you, Flotrack, for bringing it all to us in this age of endless boring baseball coverage on the networks.
