Dude, Ryan Hall killed Ryan Hall's chances of medalling. Wanjiru ran his race masterfulyl, Hall didn't run his race at all. He played it safe and payed the price.

German Fernandez should never be referred to as a cookie whether it is a tough one or not

Wow to run a mile with each lap split practically the same, is tough. And then run a 2 mile with a negative split last mile, is tough also. This is one tough cookie!

I think bc demps did it as a sprinter. Throughout history sprinters have been able to compete with the best at a younger age then distance runners. It takes years of training and mileage to usually compete at such a high level for distance runners and Fernandez's 4:11 on friday and then the double, where he runs two amazing races within a couple hours beats demps' record. Demps is a great choice though and the panel had a hard time choosing.

Demps ran competitively against professionals. How could he possibly not win this?

I agree that Fernandez is of the moments that made my Jaw drop this year. Also, Alcorn at Indoor NCAA's, as Quintana said it was all, "huge balls" or something like that. UW going 1-6 at Pac 10s. Price leading through 600 against pros at Pre. Andy Wheatings 3:58. And being fans of Quigley and Solinsky, Quigley at Standford in the 10k and Solinsky at Pre in the 2 mile. As David points out, the 800 at the trials, and also at NCAA's, too.

The 800 at the trials was great, but not "Jaw Dropping". Symmonds and Wheating weren't huge surprises to make the team. Christian Smith is the one who made that race great.

For me, it was definitely Oregon x3 at the trials here in Eugene. I would imagine it might have taken the 'Jaw Dropper' selection had that video not been put in NBC's lock-box.

The Oregon boys going 1,2,3, gets the gold for dropping my jaw, and I'm Canadian. Christian Smith grabbing standard as he somehow dives passed Khadevis Robinson at the line, that blew my mind, truly legendary heroics. It feels unnatural for me to give Bolt a silver, maybe he should be sharing the gold? Shalane Flanagan gets my vote for bronze.

But for field events, let's not forget Tia Hellebaut's gold medal winning, Goliath slaying, PR jump of 2.05 in Beijing, 'twas sick and wonderful.

German probably had the most impressive performance of the year to be sure, but he might be forgotten by running history because he didn't break the 4 minute mile in high school.

I think that the biggest jaw dropper was three Oregon guys going 1, 2,3 in the 800 trails and Christian Smith getting third place and putting his body into it to get third place

Demps is good yes.. But Demps is a football player first and its not like he made the finals at the Trials.. He was to tired to run that many races but German did an amazing double and broke several national high school records that stood forever.. He broke a 2 mile record that guys like Alan Webb and Ritz couldn't.. That means a lot to american distance running. Demps won't run track professionaly he will go play in the NFL. So I would easily vote for German over Demps in this situation.

And German could of mixed it up with the professionals just like Demps did.. German could of made the Finals in the 5k no doubt. and if you don't think so go look at the times that made it in and you will see.. And don't forget that German also took 25th at world jr cross.. that is damn impressive running with the best jr's in the world

even tho ima distance runner jeff demps seems like the obvious choice over german fernandez. these guys r totally biased b/c they're distance runners and i'll admit what german did was incredibly amazing but unrelatable to demps.
