- See Less - In high school, Chris won the Nike Team Nationals individual crown, leading his team to victory. The following week he finished 2nd at the Foot Locker National Championships. After the season, he received the inaugural Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year Award. During track, Derrick recorded a time of 13:55 for 5,000m at the Arcadia Invitational. It was the fastest 5k in a high school only race in history. Mono soon after that ended his high school career early.
In his first year at Stanford, Chris enjoyed one of the most successful years a true freshman distance runner has in NCAA history. He earned 4 All-American honors in 3 seasons, placing 7th at NCAA's in cross country, 4th and 5th in the indoor 5,000m and 3,000m, and 3rd in the outdoor 5,000m. During the winter he also qualified for the World Junior Cross Country Championships by placing 2nd at the US Junior Championships. At World Junior Cross, Chris finished a stellar 15th. In the spring he broke the American Junior 5,000m record by running 13:29.98.

I hope derrick takes german down.)
Nice coverage, thanks Flotrack for "bringing it" to those who could not attend the meet. Enjoyed the commentary and camera work.
It is sure great that you guys have the passion to bring us coverage of the sport we love. I hope some (Trolls with Bellyaches) dont take this for granted because I remember not long ago we had no coverage. What we have here is great (alot of fun too) !
I can not wait for big dance now that I got a taste of Pre Nationals!
PS, Welcome abroad John Davis!
James Sobucki said: Great job Derrick, keep it up dude, you looked great the last half of the race good luck the rest of season and Nationals, Go cardinals
john w davis adds some good stuff to the broadcast. thanks for watching the videos but stop taking yourselves so seriously....have a little fun with it! thats what we're trying to do
Starting at 11:58 through to the finish (~13:15) is SUPERB camera work. I didn't quite notice it at first, but it's like it was filmed by a movie crew, directed, set up, the whole thing. The camera angle from when they start the follow cam on Chris catching Chalanga is at just the right angle and speed to show Chris reeling in Chelanga, meeting even with them as Chris pulls even, and then stays even and just a little ahead as Chris pulls away. Fantastic camera work. Excellent Flotrack!
really good commentary on the whole, though could've been a bit louder (minor issue, just turn it up before uploading?). Flotrack is really starting to hit the big time, and getting really excellent race coverage through and through which is really exciting. Keep up the good work!
First of all the new commentator rocks. Secondly, don't call out Sammy. He had no reason to do anything but get and see what he could do. If you haven't got it figured out yet, PRENATS MEANS NOTHING...Chelanga is just testing the waters.
Ryan Sheridan ran amazingly well. If you didn't know he was injured his junior and senior year of hs and might have never run again and he made it all way to getting 4th at prenats!!!
He's the man.
Love the attitude, the confidence (while not being arrogant) and the dedication.
He's also a good interview, every time, as Ryan can attest.
I liked the dual commentary. You both have a nice rapport and it makes of for fun viewing. Cross Country meets are long, not every comment can be a statistic, it is fun to hear someone say something you were thinking as well...e.g., the uniform back comment was pretty funny. Keep it up.
John W. Davis aka "The New Commentator" is improving. Much like any new employee, he's adjusting to his job. While he's not as experienced as Ryan, he has his own style that adds entertainment to the broadcasts. In the meantime, all the COMMENTATOR HATERS can turn down the sound if you don't like his comments.
Chris is an amazing athlete, all around good guy, and just so much fun to watch! He has the perfect mentality to be a great runner. I really hope he can pull off the NCAA title in November.
The debate about front running vs. sit & kick continues...Chelanga ran his usual aggressive, front running race similar to Steve Prefontaine's tactics. However, Chelanga is not as successful at front running as Prefontaine. I applaud Chelanga's bravery as an aggressive front runner, however in order to win Nationals, he has to either get stronger or sit & kick like Galen Rupp & Chris Derrick.
My god. When Derrick turned it on a little after 5k, he just ATE UP ground. It's like watching a freight train coming...nothing you can do to stop it. That kid looked GREAT.
That is about all I have to say about the coverage. Next time, try to focus on more than just the leaders. It is a team competition, we like to hear what goes on in the pack. Watch some tape of Phil Ligget and Paul Sherwin.
Sam will learn one day. He learned in his 27:28 at Brutus Hamilton last year when he stuck in behind others and turned it on at the end. Of course, this is just a mid-season meet. Maybe he wanted to test himself and see if he could use this strategy again. Hopefully, he'll learn that if it's muddy out, and with the current crop of competition, he just might not be able to do this at nationals.
Does Chalenga's coach know anything about race strategy? Does he not have a discussion with his top runner before the race? Why does Chelanga continue to think he can win all races by charging to a idiotic lead and then die at the end. Can someone please write the coach at Liberty and give him some pointers, before Chelanga loses the NCAA championships this year again.
dude chris looked really really good. I wanna stress really! My pick for the individual title at NCAAs is still Chelenga, but Derrick is my number two pick. Wow, impressive.
I hope derrick takes german down.)

I'm a fan of the new commentary team. Keep up the great work FloTrack.
anyone ever try wearing the matumbos for a race like this? how are they?

I liked the other commentator! He made it fun!
